Culinary and Pastry Arts students win at national competition

Austin Community College culinary and pastry arts students competed at the 13th annual That Takes the Cake Sugar Art Show and Competition in Round Rock in February.

The competition gave students an opportunity to showcase their decorating skills, get feedback from a panel of renowned judges, and win awards and prizes.

Among the hundreds of contestants worldwide, ACC student Alexandra Hughes placed first in the Tasting Competition. Four additional ACC students also placed first in their categories, including Wara Pawawongsak in cookie, Dacia Schoolfield in tiered novelty cake, Karina Calderon in tiered wedding cake, and Denise Basore in specialty technique. Other winners include Gabby Arvizo, who placed second in tiered novelty cake, Bryan Dorall, who placed second in tiered wedding cake, Jeanna Carlisle, who placed third in tiered wedding cake, and MarySol Ledesma, who placed second in single tiered cake. Students Marisa Barrera-Marquez, Lauren Johnson, Carson Nunez, and Fouzia Boudjennad also were recognized in the tiered wedding cake category.
