Anne Vance

Math Professor Anne Vance joined panelists discussing innovation in higher education at the TransformingEDU conference January 8 in Las Vegas during the International Consumer Electronics Show.

Dr. Melissa Biegert, director of early college high school and adjunct associate professor of history, participated in the 2015 Public Interested conference at Harvard University January 24. The conference gives students a chance to interact with speakers and alumni about fields in public service.

Sean Moran, Geographic Information Systems Department chair, presented “Geodesign: Introducing Geographic Analysis into the Design Process” as part of Wilco GIS Day at Dell Diamond in November. In October he presented “GIS on the Cheap with Google” at the 2014 Texas GIS Forum.

Mindy Reed

Mindy Reed, adjunct associate professor of business and technical communications, presented “Green to Green: How a Sustainable Model for Library Sales Generates More Than Cash” at the 2014 Conference for Entrepreneurial Librarians at Wake Forest University in North Carolina in October. In November, she presented a workshop, “All Books Are Not Created Equal: Sprouting Green Weeding Practices in Libraries,” at the Books, Publishing, and Libraries Conference at Boston’s Simmons College. Her paper on the topic will be published in the upcoming International Journal of the Book.

Nina Butts’ essay, “Teacher’s Mission, Focus is to Prepare Students for College,” was published in the Austin American-Statesman in January. Butts is an adjunct professor of English. Read the essay (subscription required).

On display

A print by Carol Hayman.

Works by Carol Hayman, professor of anthropology, will be on display at two events sponsored by PrintAustin. Her exhibit at Austin Camera & Imaging continues through February 25. She will show her work at the Old Bakery & Emporium February 6-28. Visit the PrintAustin website for details. In addition, three of Hayman’s pieces are on display at the People’s Gallery in Austin’s City Hall. Hayman creates prints that incorporate digital imaging and traditional intaglio printing techniques.

Stories from the road

Arts and Humanities Dean Lyman Grant presented “Lyman Grant (And So Much More): A Man, a Family, a 34-Foot RV, and 48 States,” at the Rio Grande Campus Gallery Theater January 28 and 29. The program was a multimedia theatrical review of his year on sabbatical.

Submissions for the 2014-2015 Achievements of Faculty & Staff (pdf) publication are due June 12.

The publication lists individuals who earn awards or recognition on the national, regional, state, and local level as well as those who present, author, exhibit, add to their educational credentials, and receive grants or sabbaticals.

To be included, go to the Achievements of Faculty & Staff webpage and click on the applicable category to access an online submission form. Activities must have occurred between May 31, 2014, and the May 31, 2015.
