Riverside Celebration a Dí­a to Remember

The Riverside Campus hosted a full-on fiesta April 16 as Austin Community College’s fifth annual Dí­a de la Familia brought music, food, fun, and educational info to the community.

Hundreds of people came out to meet representatives from ACC’s Continuing Education, Transfer Academy, Automotive Technology program, and more. Community groups like the City of Austin’s Ruiz Branch Library, Tejano Genealogy Society of Austin, and Capital Metro’s MetroRail were also in attendance.

Leslie Montoya, Univision’s “Despierta Austin” hostess emceed the afternoon stage program which celebrated traditional Hispanic music and dance.

Los Texas Wranglers, winners of a 2011 Austin Music Award for best country band, played their brand of classic conjunto and Tejano-tinged rock and roll to a big crowd.

Travis High School’s ballet folklórico dancers enthralled the crowd, while the McCallum High School music department presented a quartet of Mariachi musicians. Dí­a de la Familia veterans, The Ortega Elementary Superstar Choir performed for the fifth year in a row.

Everyone who registered received hot burritos from Casa Chapala and free ice-cold paletas. ACC’s mascot R.B. the Riverbat made a special guest appearance, dancing with the crowd and bringing his bright purple spirit to the already shining event.
