Communities In Schools of Central Texas is seeking an experienced Community Outreach Specialist to plan, organize, implement and manage the volunteer service program including recruiting, training and engaging community volunteers and university interns in support of the organization’s mission of surrounding students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The Community Outreach Specialist collaborates with senior program staff, the development team, and the communications department to utilize volunteers and community partners to support CIS programs in public schools in the Austin/Central Texas area.

The Community Outreach Specialist represents CIS of Central Texas in the greater Austin community and is the primary contact and coordinator for individual volunteers, corporate and service groups, and university interns. The Outreach Specialist assesses agency-wide volunteer needs, orients and trains community volunteers, makes appropriate site placements, supports staff to utilize volunteers, manages the volunteer database, evaluates the volunteer program, and coordinates volunteer appreciation efforts and events.  Occasionally, evening and weekend work is required.

Qualifications & Experience                             

  • A minimum of two (2) years of professional experience recruiting, managing, training and motivating volunteers in some capacity
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds and work collaboratively with various groups within the organization and in the community
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation/public speaking ability
  • Must be highly self-motivated and able to work collaboratively and autonomously
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and manage a variety of tasks and responsibilities
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Available for occasional evening or weekend work
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology, human services, education or a related field is preferred.

Key Responsibilities              

  • Develop a proactive strategy for mission-driven volunteer and partner engagement and set goals and objectives for the volunteer program reflecting the mission of the organization
  • Collaborate with other members of the Program Support Services Team, senior program staff, the development staff, and the communications department to identify volunteer and program partnerships that provide a meaningful and productive experience for volunteers while meeting the needs of the clients
  • Serve as an ambassador/advocate for CIS and promote the volunteer program to gain community and organizational support
  • Lead presentations about CIS to large companies, community organizations, and university departments
  • Manage volunteer program partnerships including university volunteer groups and corporate or civic groups
  • Serve as the agency expert on volunteer programs and adopt volunteer best practices to inform all activities
  • Develop and implement a variety of effective strategies to recruit and retain qualified volunteers and interns with the appropriate abilities and aptitudes
  • Ensure that volunteers are given appropriate training to be successful, adapting training as necessary in accordance with upcoming trends and relevant topics and needs
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation of the program and services delivered by volunteers and interns, recommending and implementing improvements as identified and/or necessary
  • Regularly review and administer policies and procedures, including school district requirements for mentoring and partnerships, which guide the volunteer program
  • Implement forms and record keeping systems to document volunteer and intern activities
  • Develop the annual budget for volunteer program activities and administration, and monitor expenditures for the program against the approved budget
  • Prepare quarterly reports documenting volunteer program outcomes and highlighting contributions made
  • Ensure partner organizations and companies feel supported through quarterly meetings
  • Develop and implement volunteer application and interview protocols to achieve the best match between the skills, qualifications and interests of the volunteers and the needs of the organization
  • Train staff to work effectively and cooperatively with volunteers
  • Assist with conflict resolution among volunteers, staff and clients in accordance with established procedures
  • Determine and train on communication protocols for volunteers and those working with them
  • Conduct criminal history checks on all volunteer applicants
  • Manage partner “Memorandum of Understanding” (MOU) and campus agreements
  • Plan, coordinate and implement a Volunteer Appreciation Plan, volunteer recognition events, and other volunteer events
  • Regularly evaluate the volunteer program, deploying surveys and analyzing results on the extent, nature, and value of volunteer services including student outcomes
