{"id":2797,"date":"2014-12-12T17:21:16","date_gmt":"2014-12-12T17:21:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theaccent.org\/?p=2797"},"modified":"2014-12-12T17:21:16","modified_gmt":"2014-12-12T17:21:16","slug":"handling-stress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/accent\/handling-stress\/","title":{"rendered":"Handling Stress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sarah Samson and Chloe Kwak, Contributors\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 5\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Attending college can be exciting, yet stressful \u2014 especially during finals.<\/p>\n<p>A 2013 survey conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute reported that more than 30 percent of all college freshman often felt overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p>ACC students are no exception and have their own ways of dealing with stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a job and sometimes have to pick up my brother and make dinner for my family,\u201d Analee Cantu, a music student at the Northridge Campus, said. \u201cI get up really early to make breakfast and do homework.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cantu plays classical music while reading to create a relaxing atmosphere and said she likes to avoid unnecessary stress by not waiting until the last minute to study. She is also careful to get enough sleep and ask for help when needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know lot of people don\u2019t actually seek help,\u201d Cantu said. \u201cSeeking help is not an embarrassing thing. It can actually save you from an ugly letter grade you might have gotten without any help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although grades are not everything, they are an important indication of performance. Business major Heidi McCallum said, \u201cKeeping up a good GPA is a source of stress, and I get stressed the most right before the exam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCallum relieves her stress through hiking and other outdoor activities but also places great importance on being ready for exams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe prepared. Know the material so you are not stressed about it,\u201d McCallum said. \u201cStudy what you are uncertain about, more than the things that you already know.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Student Marco Gutierrez said he stay plans to take time off from his job ona<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>so he\u2019ll have plenty of time to write his final papers and study for his exams. He also plans to get a massage during finals week.<\/p>\n<p>Zarina Adams said she plans to get a lot of sleep and eat well so she feels well enough to spend most of her free time studying. Adams said finals week is especially stressful for her because she suffers from test anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips students can use to manage stress during finals:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Write out a schedule which includes study time.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Sweat it out \u2014 try an exercise class, or go for a run or walk before studying.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Say no to distractions and try not to spend too much time on social media<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Don\u2019t skip meals.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Drink plenty of water.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Allow time for proper sleep.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Stop and breathe<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 5\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u2022 Try to stay on a regular schedule<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2022 De clutter .
