{"id":7563,"date":"2022-04-13T09:22:54","date_gmt":"2022-04-13T02:22:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/accent\/?p=7563"},"modified":"2022-04-13T23:14:17","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T16:14:17","slug":"accs-student-government-association-and-how-you-can-get-involved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/accent\/accs-student-government-association-and-how-you-can-get-involved\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC\u2019s Student Government Association and How You Can Get Involved"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Story by Gloria Nguyen<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Graphics by Kate Korepova<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Edited by Pete Ramirez<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">The Student Government Association (SGA) is a student organization comprised of members who have been duly elected from the student body of Austin Community College District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to SGA\u2019s constitution, their goals are to facilitate understanding of democracy in our college, promote involvement among all members of the college community, and most importantly, to make the interests of the student body heard in our college in academic, institutional and campus affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cA strong, enthusiastic and well-trained SGA, is for the betterment of all ACC students\u201d<\/strong><\/p><cite><strong> Mohammed Elghoul, advisor for ACC\u2019s Student Government Association<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to fulfill their goals and ensure they are listening to students, SGA recruits students from all 11 campuses and from all aspects of life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohammed Elghoul, SGA\u2019s advisor, says this approach improves the lives of the student body. \u201cWhen ACC students have quicker access to an SGA member at their grade reviews or a more immediate place to express their concerns, student lives are better,\u201d Elghoul said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/accent\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/2022\/04\/group-e1649815566711.jpg\" alt=\"A group of students stand out side and smile for a picture in front of a tall clock tower.\" class=\"wp-image-7565\" width=\"527\" height=\"536\" \/><figcaption>Members of Austin Community College&#8217;s Student Government Association stand for a picture with their advisor, Muhammed Elghoul, during the recent Conference on Student Government Associations. Photo provided by Muhammed Elghoul<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In line with their approach to being an advocate for the student body, SGA is currently focused on a district-wide information-gathering campaign collecting feedback to better understand the needs and state of housing for ACC students. Their short survey has been shared by the school via email and can also be found <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScJKUJcrR0p0PZnP7V8sV-moowEtZxMg6HN2g2b7nh1jOHw8g\/viewform\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SGA tries its best to represent ACC students but COVID-19 has made it challenging to find opportunities to connect directly with the student body.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of which, which is a bit challenging now because of the COVID, is to have fellow students come to a selected location and talk to them,\u201d Elghoul said. \u201cThat way we can figure out what is important for fellow students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One off-campus activity that took a pause due to the challenges of the pandemic was the annual toy drive that is coordinated by SGA with the help of the honors society, Phi Theta Kappa. This event, which serves underprivileged youth in Travis County, is one of the student organization\u2019s largest events of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe collect toys from boxes on most campuses,\u201d Elghoul said. \u201cStudents bring the toys to the sheriff\u2019s office. Photo provided by Isaiah Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re trying to get other departments at ACC involved in SGA activities,\u201d Smith, said. \u201cSGA is supposed to be representing our school as a whole, not just SGA members.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith is leveraging his position within SGA and his expanding network of connections to improve the lives of all ACC students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m in the process of building a massive communication channel,\u201d Smith said. \u201cIf any of our students have any issues, maybe with safety, we can easily get in touch with the ACC Police Department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Apply now to be a member during SGA\u2019s 2022-2023 academic year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a member of SGA, students have opportunities to travel and meet other student leaders at other colleges, be invited to local exclusive events and represent their fellow students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The application period has started and will end on April 13.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find the application <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/1yihrmrQCO7JnM7Uk_AdpKv2-jCKNP-e4pqZCANxAmug\/viewform?edit_requested=true\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elections run from April 15 to April 25.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many positions that can be filled by students and they are all up for election. A full list of positions can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1suHpAv4lU0f15lh3zyE28mZ0npWIOnwNDOxCKq9ms1s\/edit\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only prior SGA members can run for executive board positions.
