Austin Community College trustees voted to boost student tuition by $2 per semester credit hour for in-state students (from $13 to $15 per semester hour), making ACC student tuition the highest in Texas. Out-of-state student tuition jumped from $40 to $45 per semester hour, and international student tuition rose from $75 to $100 per hour. This was in response to legislative budget cuts in the 1985 legislative session and a threat to cut state funding altogether to ACC, the only community college in the state without local tax support.

College president Dan Angel declared: “I am not in favor of raising student fees,” but “I don’t see how we can survive without making these changes. I think we have some realities we have to face.”
