Our commitment to you is to keep AI use <strong>ethical, transparent, and student-centered<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This guide helps you navigate how AI fits into your education and how you can use it to level up your skills for the future.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do different professors have different policies? <\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might notice that every class at ACC has a different AI policy. One professor might encourage it, while another asks you not to use it at all. This is because of <strong>Academic Freedom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Expertise-Driven:<\/strong> Faculty are the primary architects of your learning experience. They choose the tools that best help you master a specific subject.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Syllabus is Your Map:<\/strong> Your instructor\u2019s AI policy will be documented clearly in the syllabus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A Professional Skill:<\/strong> In your future career, every employer will have different tech policies. Learning to navigate and respect these different classroom rules is a great <strong>professionalism skill<\/strong> that will benefit you long after graduation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start a Conversation:<\/strong> If you have questions about a policy, talk to your professor. Academic freedom is a reciprocal agreement: faculty have the freedom to teach, and you have the freedom to learn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I understand my professor&#8217;s policy? <\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your professor&#8217;s AI policy should include, at a minimum, the following categories:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Introduction \u2013 Introduce your policy on GAI use in the course<\/li>\n<li>Rationale \u2013 State why and under what circumstances GAI is prohibited\/permitted\/required to be used in the course<\/li>\n<li>Definition of GAI \u2013 Define what GAI is in the context of the course<\/li>\n<li>Resources \u2013 In courses that permit or require GAI, provide resources that guide students on how to properly use GAI in the course<\/li>\n<li>Assessment \u2013 In courses that permit or require GAI, clarify if and how its use will be assessed in the completion of activities<\/li>\n<li>Penalties \u2013 Clearly state the consequences of violating the GAI policy<\/li>\n<li>Exceptions \u2013 Explain any conditions under which there may be an exception to the GAI policy in the course<\/li>\n<li>Usage Permissions \u2013\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prohibited \u2013 Clearly state what GAI activities are not allowed<\/li>\n<li>Permitted \u2013 Clearly state what GAI activities are allowed<\/li>\n<li>Required \u2013 Clearly state what GAI activities are required<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make policies easy to understand, some faculty use the <strong>AI Use Rainbow<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/ai-resource-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/253\/2026\/05\/AI-Rainbow-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/ai-resource-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/253\/2026\/05\/AI-Rainbow-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/ai-resource-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/253\/2026\/05\/AI-Rainbow-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/ai-resource-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/253\/2026\/05\/AI-Rainbow-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/ai-resource-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/253\/2026\/05\/AI-Rainbow-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/ai-resource-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/253\/2026\/05\/AI-Rainbow-250x250.png 250w, https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/ai-resource-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/253\/2026\/05\/AI-Rainbow.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your syllabus or assignment instructions might point to one of these colors to tell you what is allowed.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Violet: The Human Touch<\/strong> \u2013 All work and ideas are 100% yours. No generative AI tools are used for brainstorming, writing, or editing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blue: Idea Spark<\/strong> \u2013 You ask AI for ideas, help with an outline, or to explain a complex topic in a different way. You write the entire assignment yourself after brainstorming.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Green: The Centaur Zone<\/strong> \u2013 You work with AI as a true partner. You rewrite, edit, fact-check, and infuse the work with your own voice to make it your own.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yellow: The Heavy Editor<\/strong> \u2013 AI generates a first draft or key paragraphs. Your role is editing, rearranging, and refining the AI\u2019s output.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Orange: AI Supervisor<\/strong> \u2013 You act as a director. You give the AI detailed prompts and it generates most of the content.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Red: The Lost Voice<\/strong> \u2013 You relied on AI so much that your own voice and learning were lost. It feels more like the AI\u2019s work than your own.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can I use AI responsibly<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When AI is allowed, use the <strong>TRUST<\/strong> framework to ensure your work remains honest and high-quality.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>T \u2013 Tell Where AI Was Used:<\/strong> Be transparent. If AI helped you outline or revise, include a short note like: <em>&#8220;I used AI to help generate an outline, then wrote and revised the paper myself.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>R \u2013 Review Outputs:<\/strong> AI can be wrong or biased. Always fact-check citations and information. If AI gives you a source, verify it exists before you use it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>U \u2013 Use Your Own Judgment:<\/strong> AI is a support tool, not a replacement for your brain. You are responsible for the final result and the decisions made in your work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>S \u2013 Safeguard Integrity:<\/strong> Use AI to support learning rather than shortcut it. Don\u2019t use it to bypass the &#8220;mental reps&#8221; required to actually learn the material.<\/li>\n<li><strong>T \u2013 Treat IP with Respect:<\/strong> Respect copyright and the work of others. Don\u2019t upload someone else\u2019s original writing or art into an AI tool without permission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/ai-resource-hub\/responsible-use-guidance\/\">responsible use guidance<\/a> to make sure you&#8217;re aligned with AI policies at ACC. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can <\/strong>I use AI to level up my work?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In classes where AI is encouraged, these tools can help you boost your creativity and productivity:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Personalized Tutor:<\/strong> Ask AI to &#8220;Explain the Observer Effect in physics using a sports analogy&#8221; to help you grasp a tough concept.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Coding Coach:<\/strong> Use it to find a bug in your code and ask it to explain <em>why<\/em> the error happened so you don&#8217;t repeat it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Professional Roleplayer:<\/strong> Ask AI to &#8220;Act as a hiring manager for a graphic design firm and mock-interview me for an internship.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Design Partner:<\/strong> Use AI to brainstorm visual concepts for a marketing project or to help draft &#8220;distractor&#8221; options for a peer-review quiz you are building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your Future is Human-Focused<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At ACC, our goal is to ensure the pursuit of knowledge is never stifled, but always driven by the brilliance and bravery of our community.
