I love learning (and using) new words &#8211; as you might be able to tell from my post about the word &#8220;joyance&#8221;.\u00a0 I love my Dictionary.com app that sends me a new word every day.\u00a0 Some words are familiar, and some are not.\u00a0 Today&#8217;s word was &#8220;elevenses&#8221;, which is British slang for a midmorning break.\u00a0 Yesterday&#8217;s word was &#8220;neoteric&#8221;, which means modern; new; recent.\u00a0 A few days ago the word was &#8220;champers&#8221;, which is slang for champagne &#8211; a timely word for the new year!<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to <em>Inside Higher Ed<\/em> and Lake Superior University, we have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/quicktakes\/2019\/01\/02\/annual-list-words-and-phrases-banish\">list<\/a> of words or phrases to banish from the lexicon for 2019.\u00a0 The list includes &#8220;optics&#8221;, &#8220;thought leader&#8221;, and &#8220;importantly&#8221;.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll leave it to the clever amongst you to put all three into a sentence.<\/p>\n<p>On the plus side, <em>Inside Higher Ed<\/em> and Wayne State University also provide us with a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.wayne.edu\/news\/2019\/01\/02\/wayne-state-word-warriors-releases-2019-list-23403\">list<\/a> of words to use in 2019.\u00a0 Here is a brief selection from their list:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anecdoche or anechdoche.<\/strong>\u00a0 This word doesn&#8217;t show up in any of the three dictionaries that I have in my office, but the Google machine finds it in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dictionaryofobscuresorrows.com\/post\/42961208848\/anecdoche\">Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows<\/a>, &#8220;a compendium of invented words&#8221;.\u00a0 The definition?\u00a0 Anecdoche occurs when everyone talks at once, listening to no one.\u00a0 Have you attended any meetings like that?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Logorrhea.<\/strong>\u00a0 Logorrhea describes excessive, compulsive talkativeness.\u00a0 Do those who suffer from logorrhea show up at meetings that turn into an anechdoche?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trenchant.<\/strong>\u00a0 Trenchant means incisive, keen, clear-cut, sharply defined.\u00a0 The world could do with more trenchancy (noun), couldn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>As we start 2019, raise a glass of champers, say farewell to optics and hello to trenchancy.\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-487 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/avpacad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/213\/2019\/01\/Strawberry_and_champagne-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/avpacad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/213\/2019\/01\/Strawberry_and_champagne-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/avpacad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/213\/2019\/01\/Strawberry_and_champagne.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cheers, all.<\/p>\n<pre>Steve Ryan from Groveland, CA, USA [CC BY-SA 2.0 (https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I love language.
