class=\"p1\">Competency-based education means different things to different institutions, however to be impactful<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Learning is most important<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Time takes a backseat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">01:15<\/span> \u2013 MY WAY AT UMHB<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">UMHB recognized that they did not currently serve adult learners well<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">UMHB up until then very traditional\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Semester based<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Mostly face to face courses<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Aimed at serving students straight out of high school<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Traditional residential campus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">UMHB close to Fort Hood Military base where active duty especially need the flexibility and accessibility that a traditional program couldn\u2019t offer<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">As a solution, UMHB designed a program aimed at Adult Learners\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Subscription model, flat rate of $3000 for 6 months<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Could take as many competencies as they wanted in that 6 month period with no additional charge<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Resources included at no extra charge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">don\u2019t have to purchase textbooks<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">network of success coaches<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">access to full time faculty subject matter experts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">02:36<\/span> \u2013 HOW MY WAY AT UMHB GOT STARTED<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">President and provost excited about the program, so from the very beginning, had senior leader input and support from a resource and idea perspective<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Held voluntary open information sessions for faculty to get them excited about the program\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Shared stories about personal educational journeys<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Inspired faculty to think about how a non-traditional, adult learner could benefit from a CBE program, how it could change the trajectory of their lives<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Faculty started seeing how people they knew would benefit from a CBE program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">05:00<\/span> \u2013 EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF CURRICULUM<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Bachelor of Applied Studies degree in Organizational Leadership program developed internally<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">To keep costs down for students, decided not to purchase a publisher\u2019s content for curriculum<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Instead open education resources and resources that were freely available through the library databases<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Challenge for faculty who were used to selecting a textbook for the course\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">\u2013 Asked the faculty to develop the material themselves<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">\u2013 To vet material for the competencies that they were asking the students to demonstrate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Started with the designing the assessments and then faculty filling in the content from open education and library resources<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Brought onboard one of the faculty librarians as the Open Education Guru\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">She vets all of the material the the faculty selects<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">That the material is being used in the appropriate way<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Can it be embedded, linked, what are copyright issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">07:15<\/span> \u2013 DEVELOPING A STRUCTURE FOR CURRICULUM DESIGN<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Once the resource strategy was decided, then had to decide how to manage the curriculum design process<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Curriculum design process can become unwieldy (for any institution) without a structure in place<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">UMHB faculty are owners of a lot of the process<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Curricular Architect Team \u2013 faculty trained in curriculum and instruction\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Became adept at \u201cHow do I write a good competency statement\u201d and \u201cHow do I write a good authentic assessment?\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Those faculty began to train other faculty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Instructional Design Team\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Instructional designers<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Media specialists<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Copy editor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">08:59<\/span> \u2013 CHOOSING A DELIVERY SYSTEM<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">When deciding on how to deliver the educational experience to students in the My Way program, had to figure out what technology would do the things they wanted to do<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Described all the features they ideally wanted<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Realized that traditional management systems would not be up to standards they wanted\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Traditional LMS (Learning Management System) typically course-based whereas in this program, needed a student-based system<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Selected Fidelis Education, which touts itself as a learning relationship management system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">students root of system<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">provides way to management relationships first, but also provide curriculum and content to students where ever they are<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">provides coaches with dashboards, flags, ability to track activity feeds on every student<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">enables faculty to be assigned to specific assessments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">11:19<\/span> \u2013 FACULTY LOADING<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Had to think about how to compensate faculty during the development phase as well as when the program gets implemented<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">During development phase, paid faculty stipends at credit hour rate equal to development of regular online courses<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">When program launches, faculty subject matter experts will go into system and grade and evaluate assessments for the competency anchors assigned to them<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Each competency anchor equals 2 to 6 credit-hour equivalents<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Faculty pay is adjusted for the per credit-hour equivalent<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Faculty will log in, score and evaluate assessments, maintain a learning community around their competency anchor to monitor and answer questions that may arise, will tutor one-on-one if needed, and will email welcoming new students to their area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">In terms of faculty loading<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">First year piloting 50 students and assigning one faculty member per competency anchor and asking the faculty to track their time to use as benchmark for the following year<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">For first year, compensating faculty at similar to overload or adjunct faculty rate at UMHB<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">The benchmark will help to figure out how to compensate regular faculty who also want to teach a My Way course<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">13:51<\/span> \u2013 ACCREDITATION PROCESS<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">When looking at the idea of creating this program, started conversations immediately with regional accreditor<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Submitted a substantive change and a few months later received green light<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Kept constant communication with SACSCOC (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges) \u2013 helped to prevent delays to approval<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">14:43<\/span> \u2013 BACK-END CONSIDERATIONS<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Back-end considerations are really important for any institution considering competency-based education because every back-end system will be impacted<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Creates a university inside a university<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Once My Way program approved, back-end units at all meetings<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Having these people on board early and allowing them to think about the processes they used and changes that needed to be made were really significant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">16:05<\/span> \u2013 MAPPING COMPETENCIES BACK TO COURSES<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Need to have a roadmap of competencies matching back to courses<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Protects the student should they decide to go back to traditional courses or transfer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">16:5<\/span>7\u2013 STUDENT RECRUITMENT PROCESS<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Need to think about how to recruit students into your competency-based education program and what type of student you want to recruit<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">What is the problem you are trying to solve?<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">UMHB hired a full-time recruiting and admissions person for My Way program<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">This person became versed in CBE and was on the ground floor of building recruiting materials, prospective student website<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">The My Way program was an entirely different market than the rest of the university<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">First year not aggressively recruiting because just want to fill the pilot group, benchmark, and see if they can deliver a quality experience for those students before ramping up enrollment<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Social media also used in recruiting process<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Also contacted students who left UMHB and did not complete their degree and told them about this program<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Also relied on word of mouth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">19:18<\/span> \u2013 FUTURE OF MY WAY AT UMHB<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Future really depends on how successful pilot year is, but<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Hope to expand the pilot program<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Partner with other institutions so less reinventing the wheel<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Movement toward Texas Affordable Baccalaureate means all institutions have a role to play and can form partnerships with other universities and community colleges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">20:04<\/span> \u2013 LOOKING BACK AT THE CHALLENGES<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Two years is a long time to work on a program without being able to implement it<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">There are a lot of roadblocks<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Change is difficult and this is disruptive change\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">To back-end processes<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">To how faculty think about the way they teach<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Even just fundamental philosophical discussions as to whether CBE is a viable option for education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">21:58<\/span> \u2013 FOR THOSE CONSIDERING CBE<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Make sure you know why you are doing it \u2013 Don\u2019t innovate just to be innovative \u2013 Innovate to solve problems.
