Now have one and can see need for several more<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The ACC Student Support Specialist<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Understands the program<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Acts somewhat as an advisor to the students, guiding the students through registration, course expectations \u2013 is an anchor point<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">ACC is trying to build on this idea of a Student Support Specialist by having the general advisors specialize to advise in certain subjects \u2013 to have a niche.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">09:22<\/span> \u2013 USING AN ACADEMIC COACH<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Western Governors University uses a model of a coach and a student support specialist. Due to funding, ACC has one person fill both roles.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Gets students into the program<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Advises them<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Acts a coach to remind students how many courses left to take, apply for graduation, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Some coaches at other colleges might help students who need help with a particular area of their curriculum<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">10:43<\/span> \u2013 REGULATORY CONSIDERATIONS<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Accreditation in Texas is through Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and Texas Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) \u2013 These are ACC\u2019s regulatory boards<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When you want to set up a CBE program, immediately contact your accrediting agency and let them know<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Because ACC\u2019s CBE courses are credit-based, SACS and THECB had no issues. Both agencies just needed to be able to measure that the courses were CBE rather than traditional in class or distance learning<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">11:57<\/span> \u2013 THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN \u201cCREDIT-BASED\u201d &amp; \u201cDIRECT ASSESSMENT\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Credit-based uses same credit system as regular courses<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Direct Assessment strips away the credit hour system<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">ACC chose not to do Direct Assessment because it would be too disruptive to the back-end systems<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">13:20<\/span> \u2013 BACK-END CHALLENGES<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Front-End entails:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Building the curriculum<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Recruiting the students<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Marketing<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Helping students get jobs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Front-End tremendous job but much easier than Back-End<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Back-End challenges include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Registration<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Financial Aid<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">How to pay faculty<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">How to Load faculty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Would be nice to simplify registration process \u2013 organize course offerings by degree\/certificate programs instead of having student wade through entire list of CBE courses each semester (ACC has 41 courses which students can choose to take in 16 weeks, 12 weeks or 8 weeks)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Faculty Loading \u2013 need 14-16 students to make a class. Gets complicated when enrollment does not make a class and classes need to be combined. Need to figure out how to pay faculty per student, rather than class.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">16:53<\/span> \u2013 THE FUTURE OF CBE<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Other universities have been able take distance learning nation-wide and even internationally. This could increase funding streams<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">CBE organizes course work in such a way that may not reflect the textbook but enables the student to understand competencies needed in a career<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Departments at ACC want to have accelerated, online options for their programs<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As population moves toward being more mobile (using phones, tablets, laptops), many students no longer want to sit through a traditional 16-week course<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">19:55<\/span> \u2013 THE IMPORTANCE OF INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">ACC has alliances with about 140-150 industry specialists in Austin area relating to computer information technology, some of whom have agreed to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Interview ACC students<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Look at the competencies<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Work with faculty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Industry input one of the most important aspects of ACC\u2019s Accelerated Programmer Training (APT) program \u2013 makes students realize they have the potential to be employed when they finish<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">21:29<\/span> \u2013 CBE CHALLENGES AND SUCCESSES<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Challenges include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Building a team that is strong enough to understand and build a CBE program<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Funding \u2013 ACC is very happy with APT program and is helping to sustain the team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Successes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">APT program has doubled it\u2019s degree and certificate seekers in the last year<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Success rate has gone up 5%<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">More women have found success in Computer Information Technology field<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Have seen students who have been able to move through, re-career, and find employment<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Close to 900 students since inception of program \u2013 new students to ACC who might not have otherwise had time to go back to college<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">24:00<\/span> \u2013 SUSTAINING A CBE PROGRAM<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When funding runs out, how do you sustain the program?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Other areas of ACC now want to have CBE programs so CBE is growing organically<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With one team (leader, course designer, multimedia person, student support specialist and person placing students in jobs) ACC can build about 8 courses a semester. As the team grows, can build more courses<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">ACC\u2019s grant came through so fast (8 CBE courses online in 8 months) that only now being able to build strong policies and procedures and spread out to rest of college<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">26:24<\/span> \u2013 STUDENT REACTION TO CBE<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">78% of students take 1-2 courses a semester and now see hope that it\u2019s not going to take 6 years to get through a 2 year degree<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #914455\">27:51<\/span> \u2013 MARKETING CBE TODAY<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Marketing today is very different than marketing of the past \u2013 education does not have the funding for radio, television and film marketing routes to get a student to understand CBE<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Instead need a really strong website<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Go beyond the flyer and poster and talk to Chamber of Commerce<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Do recruitment sessions<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Chamber of Commerce promotes program and sends people to recruitment sessions that brings in 50-100 people showing up to a session every few months<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Use social media<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Capture email addresses from website to product such as Salesforce. Emails can be put in categories such as \u201cInterested,\u201d \u201cNot interested,\u201d \u201cNot qualified,\u201d \u201cContact in future.\u201d Then build recruitment database.
