title=&#8221;Interview topic timestamps&#8221; open=&#8221;off&#8221; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; border_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #914455\">00:28<\/span> \u2013 PROCESS OF SETTING UP THE CBE COURSES<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First mapped out what the student was going look at on Blackboard<\/li>\n<li>Wanted each of the competency modules to flow in the same fashion<\/li>\n<li>Then developed the labs and the tests<\/li>\n<li>Finally, enlisted the support of the instructional designer who helped design the course<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #914455\">01:24<\/span> \u2013 TYPE OF CONTENT IN THE CBE COURSES<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">A variety of materials \u2013 text to read, online textbook, PowerPoint presentations, small quizzes at the end of each section, and videos (some developed on-sight, others were taken from places like Kahn Academy)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">The purpose of all these materials was to make the course well rounded and representative of classroom courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #914455\">02:05<\/span> \u2013 THE STRUCTURE OF EACH OF THE MODULES<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">For each module, divided the course by sections in the textbook \u2013 Modules based on chapters<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">\u201cRead It, Watch It, Do It\u201d format<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Read It contained all the information the student needed to look at to learn the material\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Powerpoints<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Textbooks<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Code examples<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Watch It contained videos \u2013 made at ACC, and from Kahn Academy, YouTube, etc.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Do It contained the labs\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Prelab covered the vocabulary\/terminology of the chapter<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Labs had a programming practice \u2013 e.g. Python programming code that a student had to write<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #914455\">03:27<\/span> \u2013 IMPORTANCE OF HAVING AN INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Instructional designer is able to see the course more objectively than the faculty who created the content<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">She simplified and clarified content<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Made the course flow better<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Asked faculty \u201cWhy did you do this?\u201d At first really frustrating for faculty, but then they began to see that asking \u201cwhy?\u201d made the content better for the students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #914455\">04:48<\/span> \u2013 BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN DEVELOPING THE COURSE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Biggest challenge was planning phase \u2013 figuring out how to set up a course that was competency-based, that would allow student to move through at a faster pace<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">After first round of students went through course, their feedback helped to make additional changes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #914455\">05:51<\/span> \u2013 SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR FACULTY WHO ARE DEVELOPING CBE COURSES<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Use Instructional Designers \u2013 Ideally multiple designers if multiple faculty members are simultaneously developing courses<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Have instructional designers who understand CBE trials and pitfalls to help faculty avoid<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Stipend or release time for faculty so that they don\u2019t get overwhelmed with teaching regular courses plus developing CBE course<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Make sure CBE leader lays out very clear instructions as to what is expected to make sure all the CBE courses on the campus follow the same structure \u2013 less confusing to student<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #914455\">07:53<\/span> \u2013 SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR CBE STUDENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Tutors to help with coursework<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Coaches to inspire and help them stay on track<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #914455\">08:48<\/span> \u2013 TRADITIONAL VS. CBE STUDENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">CBE students much more motivated that on-campus students<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">CBE students know what they want whereas on-campus students often still trying to figure out what they want<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #914455\">09:35<\/span> \u2013 IS CBE FOR EVERYONE?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">No \u2013 CBE is for student who already has some of the competencies and wants to go at a faster pace<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">CBE is for motivated students who know what they want, have some experience in the workforce and are ready to move forward<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #914455\">10:30<\/span> \u2013 ARE ALL FACULTY MEMBERS SUITED TO TEACH CBE?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Yes, if they get training or help beforehand jumping in<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Need to understand the purpose of the class, and the motivation of the students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #914455\">12:00<\/span> \u2013 IN SUMMARY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">CBE is a great program for the right students<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Allows students to move through quickly, on their own time, to get the degree or certificate they need to move forward in their job<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">It\u2019s fun to teach \u2013 opens doors to all kinds of students with all kinds of experiences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=&#8221;Row&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_cta admin_label=&#8221;BUTTON Read Transcripts &#8221;
