Sonja Tellez always had an interest in science, but she wasn’t sure how to turn that into a career. At ACC, she discovered the Biotechnology Program.
“ACC put me on the path to a job in the science industry, as I have always wanted. There’s something for everyone,” she says. “You may come across hurdles, but with the great staff and support ACC has to offer, you will succeed.”
Tellez worked full time while taking classes each semester.
The lab classes were the best. I enjoyed how the experiments were set up to mimic what you would expect to come across in industry.
In her final year, Tellez accepted an internship with Austin-based XBiotech.
“The program gave me the best preparation I could ask for. The classes allowed for maximum hands-on experience.”
Tellez also took advantage of resume and interview workshops available through the Biotechnology Program. By graduation, she had accepted a full-time job.
“When I walked across the stage at graduation I could hear my family cheering. That was one of my proudest moments. As the first in my family to attend college and graduate, I didn’t know what to expect when I first enrolled. Now, I hope I’m setting a strong example for my kids.”
