April

I was 19 when I made the decision to move to Austin from my hometown, Flint, Michigan. I will never forget the decision I made because it truly changed my life. I was young, eager, anxious and ambitious to experience new things to better myself. It was very hard for me to leave my family behind and go somewhere that I had never been. I didn’t know anyone here in Austin until I registered at Austin Community College. I went through a lot of obstacles and tribulation when I moved from Michigan. There were financial crises, family issues, friends who abandoned me, etc. Through it all it was worth it because it made me a stronger person. ACC has tremendously helped me to overcome obstacles. I’ve learned to achieve in my classes, examinations, socialize with people from different cultures, etc. I’ve changed my major a couple of times from nursing to education thanks to the counselors who helped guide me in the right direction. At ACC I was part of the National Society of Leadership and Success of Chapter of Sigma Alpha Pi. I was participated as a leader in the membership program as well in groups, meetings, etc. I went to school part time all year (fall, spring, summer) and worked two jobs trying to support myself. It wasn’t easy, but I managed to get through and count my blessings. The best thing about ACC is that it works with your schedule and helps keep you motivated. The best memory at ACC is when I graduated May 12, 2011. Five years may seem like a long time, but it was worth it. This is only the beginning of my journey. I’m still continuing, going to school at Texas State University pursuing my bachelor’s degree and hopefully my master’s degree. I am the first in my family to graduate and I hope that I have motivated them to go to school and get their education. Thank you ACC for your support. I am ACC.
