ACC Pledges Assistance to Students Displaced by Hurricane Katrina

Austin Community College encourages students displaced by Hurricane Katrina to contact the college to explore options for continuing their education. The college pledges flexibility in admissions, registration, and financial aid. Additionally ACC offers 8- and 12-week semester options beginning later in the fall, as well as distance learning courses, which may help keep students on track toward their education goals.

ACC assistance can range from expedited financial aid approval to an extension of in-state tuition for storm refugees. ACC also encourages displaced faculty and staff from the affected area to contact the college regarding potential employment opportunities.

“The tragedy along the Gulf Coast has left students displaced, and many higher education institutions damaged,” said ACC President Dr. Stephen Kinslow. “ACC is committed to helping any way we can. We invite all higher education students and professionals taking refuge in the Austin area to contact ACC to determine what is possible.”

“Our hearts go out to all affected by this tragedy,” said Dr. Barbara Mink, chair of ACC’s Board of Trustees. “Our hope is that ACC can help meet the educational needs of these unfortunate victims.”

Austin Community College offers associate degrees and certificates in more than 180 areas at six Central Texas campuses. ACC opens its doors each year to more than 65,000 credit and continuing education students who benefit from the College’s great faculty and staff. ACC is the eighth largest community college in the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Education.
