Traveling Abroad? Be Mindful of Cultural Quirks

Austin, TX – March 27, 2006 – Most Americans prefer gesture over speech. Take for instance the socially accepted sign we make with our fingers for “O.K.” This is a common symbol used even in the company of strangers. But doing it in Brazil – where it’s considered very offensive – could get you in a lot of trouble.

Being sensitive to cultural differences can make life much easier, especially for businesses who serve international patrons.

In preparation for the 2006 World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) conference in May, Austin Community College’s Continuing Education Department, McElroy Translation and The International Center of Austin are offering “international awareness” training to help local businesses be savvy in international relations.

Delegates from around the world will be in the Capitol City for the conference and we want to make sure Austin leaves a lasting positive impression,” said Kirk White, executive director of the ACC Workforce Development Center for Continuing Education.

During an entertaining three-hour course taught by Csaba Dosa, attendees will participate in activities that will give them a heightened sense of cultural awareness and teach them how to meet or exceed the expectations of WCIT delegates by providing culturally sensitive customer service. Austin businesses and individuals have four sessions from which to choose:

9 a.m. – 12 p.m. or 1-4 p.m.

9 a.m. – 12 p.m. or 1-4 p.m.

Training will be held in Room 201 of the ACC Highland Business Center, 5930 Middle Fiskville Rd. Cost for each session is $25 per person. Interested businesses and individuals may register for a session (course BUSG 3009) at or by calling 512.223.7542. For more information, contact Kirk White at or 512.223.7535.
