ACC Celebrates Freedom, Honors Dean in Juneteenth Celebration

Austin – Come join Austin Community College staff and faculty for a celebration of freedom at the College’s Juneteenth festivities on June 12th at the Riverside Campus. Local musicians and dancers will provide entertainment from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Christian Youth will sing Gospel hip-hop tunes and Shake will shake things up playing the African drums. Other performers include Devine Chaos, Poetic Precha, Azariah’s Touch and the Gary Job Corps dancers.

Juneteenth commemorates the arrival of Major General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, with the news that the Civil War had ended and the slaves were free. This declaration arrived two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation became official on January 1, 1863.

As part of the festivities, Yvonne VanDyke, ACC’s dean of health sciences, will receive the Freedom Day Award. VanDyke’s being honored for her significant contributions to ACC’s health sciences programs and her commitment to improving the quality of life for people of all races, especially the African-American community, through education, creativity, and leadership.

The Riverside campus is located at 1020 Grove Blvd. For more information, contact ACC’s Student Life Office at 223-3120.
