AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ENTER INTO NEGOTIATIONS WITH PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

April 19, 2004 – Austin Community College Board of Trustees decided Monday night to enter into negotiations with Dr. Roberto Aguero as Austin Community College’s president. Dr. Aguero would bring more than 20 years of experience in teaching and senior-level leadership to ACC.

Board of Trustees Chair, Rafael Quintanilla, says Dr. Aguero possesses the leadership skills needed to move the College forward. “Dr. Aguero is a tremendously experienced and tremendously collaborative person,” said Quintanilla. “We believe he will be a good leader for us.”

Dr. Aguero spent the past seven years working as Vice Chancellor of Educational Affairs for the Dallas County Community College District. He presided over seven campuses and served as the liaison between the DCCCD and both, the Texas Legislature and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Prior to that position, Dr. Aguero served as president of Eastfield College, also in Dallas County.

Throughout his career, Dr. Aguero succeeded in implementing numerous programs, including the Rising Star Scholarship Program and the New Program Development Fund, which was instrumental in creating more than 80 new instructional programs for the DCCCD.
Dr. Aguero’s love for higher education started in 1971, when he obtained an Associate Degree at Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde. After completing a four-year degree in Biology at Angelo State University, he received a Master’s in Education at Stephen F. Austin State University. Dr. Aguero later attended Pennsylvania State University where he obtained a Doctoral Degree in Philosophy. Following this, Dr. Aguero received a Certificate of Completion in Higher Education Management at Harvard University.

Former President Richard Fonté left in January after he accepted a White House appointment as the National Director of the WE THE PEOPLE initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, DC.
