AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE HELPING THOSE WITH CHEMICAL DEPENDENCIES

Students enrolled in ACC’s Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor Program are taking a proactive approach to curb alcoholism. On April 8 they are offering free alcohol screenings to the public. The event will be held at ACC’s Rio Grande Campus, located at 1212 Rio Grande, in the student lounge, from 10 am to 2 pm.

A recent national survey shows 2.1 million students admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol last year. “Nobody ever starts out thinking I’m going to abuse alcohol. It just sneaks up on them,” said ACC Human Services Student Anne Myers. Myers, who will be screening participants, hopes their effort will curb the disturbing trend. “This is a good time for people to assess their personal situation.”

Liz Coccia, Professor of Human Services, believes ACC’s participation in National Alcohol Screening Day is vital in helping the local community. “One in eight Americans have a problem with alcohol, and 1 in 4 individuals grew up in at home where alcohol was a problem,” said Coccia.

Participants will be asked to fill out a confidential questionnaire, and will be offered professional help if needed.

Last year ACC’s Human Services Department screened more than 100 people for alcohol abuse. This year’s event is expected to serve even more people.
