GO THEATER. GO COLLEGE.

March 11, 2004 – As part of Austin Community College’s Closing the Gaps efforts to get more kids interested in going to college, ACC partnered with the University of Texas Go Theater team and the Austin Independent School District’s Project Advance Coordinators. The Go Theater team will perform Friday, March 12, 2004 at Reagan High School at 2:30 and 3:25 in the High School Theater.

The UT Go Theater Team performs a series of sketches designed to help motivate students to continue their education and to explore barriers they feel might keep them from pursuing higher education. Those barriers may include finances, parental support, peer pressure and pregnancy. Go Theater Co-Director Jennifer Cameron says, “The performance also provides humor in dealing with myths surrounding college and what college is really like.” The show is followed by a discussion facilitated by the actors.

ACC Student Recruitment, Community Outreach and Early College Start approached the UT Go Theater team to perform for the Austin Independent School District. “We need to be as creative as possible to reach those kids most at-risk for missing the chance to go to college,” said Dr. Sharon King, ACC’s Director of Student Recruitment and Support Services. “There are so many services to help students from all backgrounds get into higher education. From
there, they will be able to get better jobs and be a more viable part of the community,” said Dr. King.

The UT Go Theater team will also perform a community-wide show on April 22 at 7:00pm at Reagan High School. The free performance is open to anyone interested.

The UT Go Theater team is one of twelve around the state that is sponsored by the College for Texans Campaign of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
