HIP-HOP INTO COLLEGE

Austin, TX – What do college and hip-hop music have in common? They both have rhythm. While hip-hop music offers listeners a funky rhythm to dance to, college give students a rhythm of academic and workforce classes to prepare them for a career. Together Austin Community College and Family Forward are hosting “Hip-Hop Into College: Get Educated on Education.” The event aims at informing and motivating young minority and other underserved students about the rewards for continuing their education. “Hip-Hop Into College” runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 7 at ACC’s Eastview Campus, 3401 Webberville Road.

“We are trying to increase participation in higher education, especially for those who might be the first in their family to go to college,” said Loretta Edelen, ACC Community Outreach Director. “We want them to understand they can go to college, that it’s affordable, and the more you learn, the more you earn.”

“Hip-Hop into College” will provide families with information on financial aid, campus life and career preparation. Representatives from ACC, University of Texas, Huston-Tillotson, Texas State, other area colleges and several financial groups will be available to answer questions. Former UT quarterback James Brown will kick-off the event, and stellar performances will be given by motivational rapper NOOK and the UT Theatre Team. Baby of the Unified Tribe will also be at the event to inspire youth to follow their dreams with spoken word.

“We want to provide a fun and inviting atmosphere for teens and their parents to learn more about higher education,” said Dana Edgerton, Family Forward Youth Leadership Program Specialist. “We hope that Hip-Hop into College can give them a jump start on pursuing higher educational goals.”
