HOUSTON_WE’VE GOT NASA!!

Have you ever wondered what it’s really like in space? Have you thought about how the space shuttle works? Or even how Astronaut Ed White must have felt when he stepped outside the spacecraft and became the first man to float in space? You can get the answers to these questions and many more at Austin Community College on July 19 and 20, when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) hosts two exciting workshops aimed at “inspiring the next generation of explorers.”

“Until now, outer space seemed like something you just read about in science books,” said Sharon Duncan, ACC director of Alternative Teacher Certification. “Now with NASA coming to us, we can bring space into our sphere, and receive first-hand accounts of life in space from the experts.”

NASA Education Specialist Angelo Casaburri is providing hands-on inquiry-based learning for people of all ages through individual, group and teacher guided aerospace activities. In a section called “Dress for Success – In Space” participants will learn about the history of space walking and the protective measures that must be taken with suit design. For the more creative souls, NASA is offering sessions on how gravity works and how to fly and control aircraft. For instance, in “Rocketry – In and Outside the Classroom,” Casaburri will help participants build a rocket out of a two liter soda bottle and simulate how a rocket is propelled.

“We are extremely dedicated to inspiring next generation explorers,” said Dwayne Brown, spokesperson at NASA headquarters. “Today’s classrooms are tomorrow’s explorers.”

Teachers of grades EC-4 and grades 5-9 are encouraged to come, and children are welcome if accompanied by a parent. To register call 512.223.7542 or register in person at the Highland Business Center ‘s Continuing Education office on the 4th floor. Don’t miss this space event!
