MOVE OVER AMERICAN IDOL_HERE’S AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Who says you have to be a pop star to make it in music? Singing is just one of many avenues down the journey of Commercial Music Management. This summer Austin Community College is hosting several weeklong music and recording workshops for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who want to learn more about the music industry’s job opportunities. The two sessions run from 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. June 7-11 and June 14-18 at ACC’s Recording Studios on the Northridge Campus, located at 11928 Stonehollow Drive.

“ACC is opening its recording studios to area high school students, so that they can come see firsthand how the commercial music industry really works,” said Commercial Music Department Chair Geoffrey Schulman. “It’s an experience they won’t get anywhere else.”

The ACC Commercial Music Management workshop teaches students how a commercial “pop song” is conceived, constructed and produced. Through hands-on participation students learn how the song is initially created, how to make the demo and final recording, and how the song is distributed to radio and industry.

Participants even get a chance to record and mix a rock song, a hip-hop or dance song, and a radio commercial. At the end of the sessions, each student receives a CD of his or her completed work.
Austin Community College ‘s recording studio is equipped with standard technology used in the music industry, as well as Macintosh G4 computers loaded with some of the latest music software like Cubase and Reason.

Many of ACC’s Commercial Music Management students have interned with nationally recognized recording labels such as New West, Universal and EMI.

Last year dozens of high school students attended ACC’s Commercial Music Summer Workshop. Many of the participants described the experience as “life-changing” and “very helpful.”
