Calling All Austin Caregivers and Personal Attendants

Austin, TX – July 12, 2006 – Approximately 125,000 elderly and disabled Texans currently receive in-home care by trained caregivers and personal attendants. Although the need for these employees is great, their compensation and benefits are often lacking.

In return for their generous services, Austin Community College (ACC) and Services for the Elderly (SFTE) will co-host the 3rd Annual Attendant Benefit Fair on Saturday, July 15, 2006 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Multi-purpose Hall, room 8500 at ACC’s Eastview Campus, 3401 Webberville Rd.

“Hundreds of caregivers and personal attendants generously devote their time and energy caring for Austin’s disabled and elderly,” said Kirk White, Executive Director of the ACC Workforce Development Center. “This event will provide those caregivers the recognition they deserve and the resources they need to further enhance their skills, connect with other attendants in the area, identify potential employers, and receive information about benefits such as affordable medical insurance.”

“Personal attendants and caregivers perform the tasks that elderly and disabled people need to continue living in their own homes” said Katy Kappel, executive director of SFTE. “Their services range from housework and laundry to assistance with bathing and grooming. While they remain dedicated to their clients, caregivers and attendants receive very low pay and few benefits.”

State Rep. Elliott Naishtat will speak at 12:30 and present the Attendant of the Year Award. In addition to recognizing the efforts of personal attendants and caregivers , the benefits fair will also feature information on professional development, educational opportunities, vision and health screenings, seminars on caring for people with Alzheimer’s, and entertainment by the Gospelaires. Door prizes, food and beverages and activities for children will also be provided.
