Physical Therapist Assistant career information
will be available at this month’s open house.
The Physical Therapist Assistant Program is ready to take your measure. Faculty and students are offering free health and fitness screenings during an open house Tuesday, October 23.
You can receive assessments of body fat composition, posture, hamstring flexibility, grip strength, balance, and diabetes risk during the open house, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the Eastview Campus, Building 9000, Room 9301.
The event is part of national Physical Therapy Month, which is focusing on the obesity epidemic as part of this year’s theme, “The Science of Healing, the Art of Caring.”
“The role that physical activity plays in preventing and managing obesity in children and adults is the focus of this month’s celebration,” says Jana Israel, PTA Program chair. “Physical Therapy Month provides members with the opportunity to educate the community about who we are and what we do.”
The health and fitness fair is just one of several activities planned. ACC students recently joined with students from Texas State University-San Marcos for an amputee and prosthetic course. In addition, PTA faculty and a number of students will be attending the Texas Physical Therapy Annual Conference and Student Conclave in Galveston October 18-21.

I think the free open house event is an excellent idea to encourage young people at risk to receive an evaluation of where they stand in respect to physical fitness.

Wow,
Looks like I’m a little late here! But I just stumbled across this website/post. What a great service you folks are providing, during my years in college, even though we had “the best” student gym facility at the time. We never were offered this quality of service from the university regarding our health/fitness.
Great job! Way to go above and beyond. Hopefully this catches on.
Thanks!

Having worked as a rehab tech and personal trainer I know the importance of what you are offering. This should be offered at every college especially the assessment of body fat composition and posture because it is a quick process and will provide people with a reason to get in shape.

I agree that you are providing a valuable service. The postural assessment is great for students who spend a lot of time hunched-over in a chair studying.
Hope all went well!

I hope this becomes a regular event. If people gain knowledge about where they are at, it is much easier to have a goal to reach. Teaching people about body fat, flexibility and so on is fantastic. It dispels the myths that stop people getting fit and healthy and staying that way for life. Knowledge is power and power motivates like nothing else. Good on you!

Have to agree with all the previous comments, this should be offered to people (for free) a lot more often.
Great job.

I’m about to begin training again. It nice to find some. Sometimes people, most certainly myself included, need to be reminded about the importance of working the legs. When I first began weight training I did exactly as you mention in your article. I concentrated on upper body and neglected my legs. Just as you state, I am paying the price now and I need to play “catch up”.

I really like the theme “The Science of Healing, the Art of Caring.” It is really important to be in good health and to keep you fit. Really appreciate what you guys are doing . There should be a lot of program like you are doing. People should get to know what physical therapy can bring to them.
