Student Life Holds First Diversity Conference

Austin Community College’s Student Life is hosting its first ever Diversity Outreach Student Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, October 26, in the multipurpose room at Eastview Campus.

The conference, which is free for ACC students, promotes awareness and an appreciation of diversity through forums, presentations, skits, and peer facilitation. Topics include intercultural communication, race relations, freedom of speech, and much more.

“You hear the word ‘diversity’ all of the time, but we want to teach students what it really means,” says Toniette Haynes, Student Life coordinator. “We’re even going to take it a step further and connect students with the resources they need to take action, make a difference and direct their emotions to something productive so that they can be more efficient in the workforce, as citizens and in society.”

Keynote speakers are Dr. Cherry Ross Gooden, associate professor in the College of Education at Texas Southern University in Houston; and Dr. Belle S. Wheelan, president of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Food and entertainment will be available. Register or by calling Haynes at 223.5303.
