State Agrees to Replace Vetoed Funding

Austin, TX – October 24, 2007 – The Austin Community College District Board of Trustees plans to rescind a $2 general fee increase at their meeting November 5.

The move follows an announcement Tuesday from Governor Rick Perry, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, and House Speaker Tom Craddick to restore more than $150 million in statewide community college funding that was vetoed by Gov. Perry on June 15.

“We are pleased with this state’s decision to restore these crucial funds and look forward to removing the fee increase,” said John Hernandez, chair of the ACC Board of Trustees.

The board approved the $2 increase along with $2 million in districtwide reductions following the state’s cuts of health benefits for community college employees, which amounted to a loss of approximately $7.2 million for ACC.

Along with restoring health benefit funds, the agreement also includes development of an incentive funding program based on student outcomes.

Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow, ACC District president/CEO, said he appreciates the intent to make community colleges eligible for incentive funding, historically allocated for four-year institutions.

“I hope community colleges will be treated as equal partners in higher education, and that the governor’s office will work directly with us to better align public policy with the mission we are all focused on – closing the education gap to ensure Texas has the skilled workforce necessary for a competitive economy.”
