ACC Launches New Healthcare Workers

Health Sciences honors graduates December 11-12 at Eastview Campus

December 11, 2008 – AUSTIN, TX –  A single mom with big dreams to enter the high-demand field of nursing is among almost 200 healthcare students, nearly half of them nurses, who will graduate from Austin Community College Thursday and Friday, December 11-12, at the Eastview Campus, 3401 Webberville Road.

Completion ceremonies are an ACC tradition. They signify the last day of studentship and the beginning of a professional career. Five ceremonies are scheduled for seven programs of study: Vocational Nursing, Associate Degree-Registered Nursing, Surgical Technology, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy, and Cardiac and Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

“Quality healthcare takes an entire team of highly skilled professionals,” says Dr. Eileen Klein, executive dean of the Health Sciences Division. “Our graduates make important contributions at both at the front lines and behind the scenes.”

Roseline Gichomo is among the vocational nursing graduates to be honored Thursday night.

“My new career means the world to me,” says Gichomo, a single mother who plans to become a licensed vocational nurse, a step up from her previous position as a nurse’s aide. “I won’t have to work double shifts anymore to pay bills, and I’ll have more time to spend with my daughter.”

Armed with a certificate, Gichomo will now take her licensure exam. ACC’s licensure pass rate for the Vocational Nursing Program is 100%. The Registered Nursing Program pass rate is 96.9%.
