ACC Math Team Finishes First in National Competition

AUSTIN, Texas – Austin Community College was recently named first place winner of the 2008-2009 American Mathematical Association of Two-Year College Student Math League regional competition.

ACC came from behind to eke out a one-point victory in the final round over Pima (Ariz.) Community College, second-place finisher in the Southwest Region competition.

“We did it without any single exceptionally high score, but rather with great depth and balance throughout the team,” says ACC Mathematics Professor Tony Vance, who organized the competition and ACC’s participation.

The math competition consists of two rounds of exams – one given during the fall, and the other during the spring semester, covering pre-calculus, algebra, trigonometry, synthetic and analytic geometry, and probability.

Benjamin Albot, Austin Arlitt, and Zach Wegner were ACC’s top individual competitors, finishing third, fourth, and fifth respectively.  Rounding out ACC’s other award winners were Michael Newburger, Daniel Miller, Freddie Barrett, Cory Thornton, and Brian Shultz.

On Monday, May 11, the ACC Foundation presented each winner with a cash award at the ACC Board of Trustees meeting.  This marks the eighth year the foundation has supported students participating in the annual competition.
