ACC Police Receive “Best Practices” Recognition

The Texas Police Chiefs Association Foundation has awarded the Austin Community College District Police Department “Recognized Status” for best practices in law enforcement. ACC PD is the first community college in Texas to receive this recognition and the 19th recognized law enforcement agency statewide.

“The ACC Police Department is committed to providing quality community service and a safe college environment,” says ACC Police Chief Frankie Waller. “Our officers and our community can be proud of this best practices accreditation.”

“Recognized Status” indicates that the ACC Police Department meets or exceeds all of the identified best practices for Texas law enforcement, in areas such as patrol and investigative operations and protection of citizen rights.

“This recognition reflects the college’s commitment to having the best police operations possible,” says Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow, ACC president/CEO. “ACC students, employees, and the community can be assured that our police department operates with the highest of standards.”

Over the past year, ACC PD undertook an internal review of all its policies, procedures, and operations, and the college made any necessary modifications in record time, according to the Texas Police Chiefs Association Foundation.

“The Austin Community College Police Department, under the direction of Chief Frankie Waller, has demonstrated they are a professional agency in every sense of the word,” says James McLaughlin, executive director of the Texas Police Chiefs Association. “As the first community college police department in the state to achieve Recognized Status, the college stands as a leader in professional law enforcement.”

The department will be recognized at the Texas Police Chiefs Association’s annual conference next April.

ACC PD maintains offices at each of the college’s seven campuses. The department includes 58 sworn officers as well as support staff. Chief Waller joined ACC in 2006 after retiring as assistant director of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
