Curtain Rises on Drama Department’s “Smoking Lesson”

smoking_lesson_posterThe Austin Community College District’s production of “Smoking Lesson” opens Friday, February 26, at the Rio Grande Campus Gallery Theater. The play by Julia Jordan tells the story of several young women who spend time underneath a bridge on the Mississippi River, exploring the violent death of their friend years earlier and befriending a mysterious young man who may be responsible for the tragedy.

“It has been nice to work with a play that is simply about story and character,” says Marcus McQuirter, Drama Department professor and director of the show. “It’s a great piece to do within the educational theater setting because it challenges young actors to focus on their craft as storytellers.”

“Smoking Lesson” can be seen Feb. 26-28 and March 5-7 at the Rio Grande Campus Gallery Theater (1212 Rio Grande St.). Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m.; Sunday performances are at 2 p.m. There is a suggested $10 donation for general admission and $5 donation for students. Proceeds benefit the Drama and Dance Scholarship Fund.
