The Austin Community College District is hosting a free information session to promote its Women in Green Jobs program, an effort to recruit more women into the emerging solar technology field. The session is scheduled for Saturday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Riverside Campus (1020 Grove Blvd.).
The session will provide insight into green technology job growth and information about training opportunities available at ACC, with a focus on upcoming solar courses designed to support female students. Right now just 10 percent of ACC students studying solar technology are women.
“With the growing importance of this field, we need to make recruitment of women a priority,” says Cathy Redson, a solar instructor for Women in Green Jobs. “ACC’s program will help ensure that women realize the opportunities that are out there.”
The Women in Green Jobs campaign is funded by a $59,800 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau. Through the grant, ACC hopes to boost the percentage of women in solar courses to 20 percent by the end of this year. The initiative targets new high school graduates, current ACC students, women using local workforce board and non-profit agency services, and members of green industry professional groups.
Anyone interested in attending the information session should register at austincc.edu/choices/green.

I think it is fantastic that ACC is making an effort to get women involved in such a field and that ACC is targeting this field with persistence in general. If I were not already so far in the field I am pursing, I would be inclined to learn more! Go ACC!!

I have been working in the field of architecture for the past 25 years. I am very intersted in learning more about sustainable design and Energy Jobs. I would very much like to attend tomorrow’s information session.
Thank you,
