The Big Dance is coming to Austin Community College this spring. But we’re not talking about slam dunks, full-court presses, and JumboTrons — we’re talking mascots.
After receiving hundreds of mascot suggestions and vetting ideas through a rigorous research process, the ACC mascot search committee has whittled the choices down to the final four. You’ll be able to follow a field of 64 contestants as we reveal the four finalists in the Mascot Madness 2010 bracket!
Similar to the annual college basketball playoffs, ACC’s Mascot Madness starts with 64 contenders. Each day, potential mascots will get eliminated until there are just four remaining. That’s when students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the entire community will get a chance to vote for their favorite.
Even before votes are cast, mascot fans can participate in the tournament by following along on Twitter and tweeting their thoughts on the competition.
The ACC Twitter page will be the first place to receive results as they happen, and the tournament bracket will be updated as each round is completed on the Mascot Search page.
Tweet now, and vote March 22 through April 2 on the Mascot Search page.
To raise awareness of Mascot Madness, the search committee – and the pink bunny serving as the “interim mascot” – will make a stop at every ACC campus during the voting period. Check it out from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the following dates:
- Cypress Creek: March 23
- Eastview: March 24
- South Austin: March 25
- Rio Grande: March 29
- Northridge: March 30
- Riverside: March 31
- Pinnacle: April 1

Did the rooster make it to the dance? That’s my choice…

Just found the bracket – too awesome. I like the “Roosters”, the “Chupacabras”, and the “River Bats”. How the “Achievers” beat the “Mariachis” – I’ll never know…

If that pink energizer bunny is our mascot then I’m going to have to transfer earlier than expected…

One of the eliminated mascots is “Bbhoggawacts.”
….what in the world is a “Bbhoggawact”?

I don’t think we can use a copywitten name and graphic / photo, etc.as our mascot – the company would sue us and make us change it. Just something to think about. Does anyone know if the name “Riverbats” is a copywritten name for something similar? There are laws….

My initial comment was in response to “Austin” regarding pink energizer bunny

I’m looking at the mascot website but for the life of me can’t figure out how to see images of the suggested mascots. I’ve looked at the brackets but nothing is clickable. How do I vote for something I can’t see?

How about something like the Austin Community College Eagles?

Why do we need a mascot? Do we have a football or a basketball team that I don’t know about? The mascot better not be that pink bunny. That would be really embarassing.

So I just opened up the “Mascot Madness”. Madness is correct. Did the student body really vote these names down to these last four? The last one can’t even be found on the internet. I was unaware that the Duracell Wannabe is our temporary mascot. I thought it was a student project with some pink thing with testicals on its face. I admit Donnie Darko also came to mind. I dearly hope that the student body does get out the vote. I dont think an oversized bunny slipper in the making is the mascot that most of us want to be related with. A mascot is supposed to instill fear in the other school. With our current temporary mascot we may end up being cuddled against our will. Beyond that, a mascot should be a source of pride to the alumni. The current tack of the Final Four is closer to a laughable embarrassment than a source of pride. Good luck with what has been a sad and unbelievable tragedy of a school project.

Don’t worry about the pink bunny – it was hanging around only to help us engage the community in this process. And engage they did. More than 800 mascots were suggested and reviewed by the mascot committee, and a shorter list was presented to focus groups made up of 60 representatives of the student body, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community. The four finalists will be announced today. Once a winner is suggested from the four finalists, you will again have an opportunity to weigh in with what the winning mascot should look like. The process will be complete, and the mascot unveiled, sometime in fall. Thank you all for your input on this important initiative to build college pride and unity. Go Mascot!

Really this is a school I am suppose to be proud I am graduating from? Wow is all I can say. This is embarrassing. I hope in the end the faculty will not let the school down and pick some ridiculous mascot that has no meaning to what this school represents. To some ACC is a blowoff, others a transfer and to others who missed out on their education for life reasons a second chance. I really would like to see in the end if the faculty, regardless of what some students who find this a joke may vote, will speak up to insure a mascot worthy of what this school means.
