ACC, San Marcos Celebrate Auto Tech Opening April 8

San Marcos residents now have convenient access to training in one of the nation’s fastest growing industries, so it’s time to celebrate.

Austin Community College District is hosting at the “Auto Technology @ ACC-San Marcos Goodnight Center Ribbon Cutting and Dedication” 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at the center, 1331 State Hwy. 123, San Marcos.

The event showcases ACC automotive technology classes now offered at the Goodnight Center, following renovation of the former high school’s auto shop. The partnership between ACC and San Marcos CISD, which owns the facility, brings greatly needed workforce training to the area, says Phyllis Snodgrass, San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce president.

“The chamber is pleased to welcome this ACC program to San Marcos, and we are excited about the opportunities it brings our citizens and businesses,” Snodgrass adds.

The nationally accredited Automotive Technology Program is just one of many workforce programs taught at the college. More than 235 associate degrees and certificates are available, many in workforce fields from computer technology to healthcare.

“Most jobs being created today require a two-year associate degree or technical certificate, so we’re eager to expand regional access to this valuable credential,” says Mike Midgley, ACC vice president of workforce education and business development. “The response so far has been extremely positive.”

This spring more than 900 students take ACC classes in San Marcos, both at the Goodnight Center and San Marcos High School. Centers primarily offer core curriculum/general education classes that can count toward an associate degree at ACC or transfer to any Texas public university and count toward a bachelor’s degree.

The event will feature chamber and SMCISD officials, as well as ACC students. Refreshments and tours of the facility are planned, and guests are invited to have their photo taken in front of the “i am acc” banner.

The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are suggested. Email [email protected] or call Goodnight Center Supervisor Sherry Priddy at (512) 353.2019.

If you need a sign language interpreter or other accommodation for this event contact [email protected] or (512) 223.6151. Requests should be submitted at least 48 hours in advance.
