May 8 Board of Trustees Election Results

Saturday’s election decided two of the three Austin Community College District Board of Trustees seats on the ballot, with another seat set for a runoff election next month.

Place 4 winner Jeffrey Kyle Richard, president/CEO of the Austin Area Urban League, began serving on the ACC board in 2004 and ran unopposed in this election.

Place 6 winner is Guadalupe “Lupe” Sosa, a retired social service program manager for the state.

Place 5 will now go to a runoff, as no candidate secured the 50 percent plus one vote required to win. The top two vote-getters will participate in the runoff. Here are the complete results:

Place 4

  • Jeffrey Kyle Richard – 10,270 votes (winner – unopposed)

Place 5

  • Vic Villarreal – 4,813 votes (39.43 percent – will go to runoff)
  • David S. Reiter – 3,065 (25.11 percent – will go to runoff)
  • Fred L. McGhee – 2,272 (18.61 percent)
  • Davis Jones – 2,057 (16.85 percent)

Place 6

  • Guadalupe (Lupe) Sosa – 6,310 votes (50.65 percent – winner)
  • Raymond Hartfield – 3,836 (30.79 percent)
  • Michael Perrine – 2,312 (18.56 percent)

These are final results verified by election officials; the ACC board canvassed the votes May 17.

The runoff election will be held June 12.

Board members serve staggered 6-year terms and are elected at large by registered voters who live within ACC’s taxing district. This includes the Austin, Leander, Manor, Del Valle, and Round Rock school districts, along with the city of Austin (which includes portions of the Pflugerville and Eanes school districts). Candidates must also reside in the taxing district.

The ACC Board of Trustees provides high-level guidance to ensure the college’s programs and initiatives meet the needs of the communities served. The 9-member board develops ACC’s policies, priorities, long-term goals, and strategy; however, trustees do not manage the college or make specific operational decisions. The operation of the college is the responsibility of the ACC president – the only staff member the board hires.
