June 12 Board of Trustees Runoff Results

Dr. Vic Villarreal won Saturday’s runoff election for Place 5 on the Austin Community College District Board of Trustees.

Villarreal, a business consultant and adjunct professor of management at ACC, defeated David S. Reiter, a senior executive with Luminex Corp., an Austin-based biological testing technologies company. Here are the unofficial results:

  • Villarreal – 5,163 votes (54.8 percent)
  • Reiter – 4,250 votes (45.2 percent)

These unofficial results must be verified by election officials; the ACC board will canvass the votes on June 21. Villarreal and Guadalupe Sosa, who won the election for Place 6 last month, will be sworn in that night; Jeffrey Richard, who ran unopposed for Place 4, will also be sworn in for his second term.

Place 5 was previously held by Raul Alvarez, who did not run for re-election.

Board members serve staggered 6-year terms and are elected at large by registered voters who live within ACC’s taxing district. This includes the Austin, Leander, Manor, Del Valle, and Round Rock school districts, along with the city of Austin (which includes portions of the Pflugerville and Eanes school districts). Candidates must also reside in the taxing district.

The ACC Board of Trustees provides high-level guidance to ensure the college’s programs and initiatives meet the needs of the communities served. The 9-member board develops ACC’s policies, priorities, long-term goals, and strategy; however, trustees do not manage the college or make specific operational decisions. The operation of the college is the responsibility of the ACC president – the only staff member the board hires.
