Dr. Vic Villarreal, winner of Place 5, and Guadalupe Sosa, winner of Place 6, were sworn in for their first terms on the board. The previous holder of Place 5, Raul Alvarez, did not run for re-election; former Place 6 Trustee Veronica Rivera stepped down last fall after accepting a job in Washington, D.C.
Jeffrey Richard was sworn in for his second term Monday after running unopposed for Place 4. Sosa and Richard won their seats in May. Villarreal won a runoff election held June 12.
The board elected these officers for 2010-2011: Chair – Dr. Barbara Mink (Place 7); Vice Chair – Allen Kaplan (Place 9); Secretary – John-Michael Cortez (Place 2).
“We welcome and congratulate our new members and officers,” says Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow, ACC president/CEO. “This promises to be an exceptional board that will guide ACC to continued success during a time of tremendous growth and opportunity.”
Board members serve staggered six-year terms and are elected at large by registered voters who live within ACC’s taxing district. This includes the Austin, Leander, Manor, Del Valle, and Round Rock school districts, along with the city of Austin (which includes portions of the Pflugerville and Eanes school districts). Candidates must also reside in the taxing district.
The ACC Board of Trustees provides high-level guidance to ensure the college’s programs and initiatives meet the needs of the communities served. The nine-member board develops ACC’s policies, priorities, long-term goals, and strategy; however, trustees do not manage the college or make specific, operational decisions. The operation of the college is the responsibility of the ACC president – the only staff member the board hires.
