July 11 marked half a century since the publication of the book that is required reading in schools across the country.
Along with a number of local writers, O’Connell participated in an anniversary event at BookPeople Sunday night, reading passages from the book and talking about what it meant to him. O’Connell reflected upon the impact of “To Kill a Mockingbird” in an essay he read on KUT radio. Click here to listen.

I liked your essay on “To Kill a Mockingbird” I remember reading it as a junior in high school and it had such a huge impact on me. It is still by far one of my favorite books. I liked the way you summed it up and how it impacted your life as well. Thank you for writing your essay:)
