ACC’s Arts & Humanities Division kicks off its fall season in September. The theme of “Choice, Challenge, Commitment” underlies this semester’s performances, exhibits, and lectures.
“With the nation at war and suffering economic difficulties, the Arts & Humanities Division wanted to express something positive – the idea that things may be tough, but we will get through them,” says Lyman Grant, dean of Arts & Humanities. “This theme is reflected in the works that will be presented this semester and in the personal stories of our students, who may face challenges but remain committed to achieving their personal goals.”
Fall performances include Theresa Rebeck’s “Mauritius,” directed by Drama Department Chair Shelby Brammer. The play, which hits the Rio Grande Campus Mainstage Theater in October, involves two half-sisters who inherit a potentially valuable stamp collection and three seedy, high-stakes collectors who want to get their hands on it.
“You might not think a play about rare stamps could be so engaging,” says Brammer. “But ‘Mauritius’ simmers with constant surprise. It fits the ‘Choice, Challenge, Commitment’ theme perfectly: All the characters make choices to stake their claim on the collection, face formidable challenges, and are committed to their quest.”
For the second year in a row, ACC is hosting a Big Read program in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts to promote reading throughout the community. This fall’s Big Read centers around Julia Alvarez’s “In the Time of Butterflies,” a work of historical fiction that recounts life in the Dominican Republic under a brutal dictatorship in the mid-20th century. Alvarez will read from her work on Nov. 17 at the Mexican American Cultural Center (600 River St.).
