Volunteering in your community could help pay for your education.
The Austin Community College District is sponsoring a program that offers scholarships to students who participate in community service. Funded through the “Texas Campus Compact – Students in Service” grant, the program takes place over a year and requires students to complete 300 hours of service learning work in a local public school.
When students complete the necessary hours, they will receive $1,100 vouchers for tuition. The tuition voucher may be used at any public college or university, but students must be enrolled at ACC for the duration of the program.Â
The volunteer work includes mentoring and tutoring younger students.

Sounds very interesting! Does it matter what the ACC student’s age, residency, or major is? I think I will go to one of the meetings.

The Texas Campus Compact Students in Service Program is open to all majors. However, the program has a strong focus on those interested in working in the public schools. The majority of the time will be spent working in high schools in the areas of math and science. The TX CC SIS students will also work in the middle schools and elementary schools. Our goal is develop a rotation system so that students can see the complexities of teaching and learning at all grade levels and explore the potential reasons why students decide to drop out or not attend college.
Under the program design, students will have a year to complete 300 hours in service, of which, 80% has to be in direct contact with the community. In our case, it will be the public schools. In addition to working in the schools, students will be assigned an ACC Faculty Mentor, attend monthly meetings, blog about their experiences, will be exposed to guest speakers/programs from ACC and the community that are addressing the issues of drop out and student underachievement and what can be done to promote a “college going” culture.

$1100/300hrs computes to 3.67 per hour? Is there more incentive attached to this community service?
By Dorothy David October 23, 2010 - 7:46 am
@Charles: my sentiments exactly! PLUS, the extra meetings, blogging, driving…we’ll have to see…

Can previous volunteer experience in a Public Library count? Teaching in a
pre-school setting at a library. I feel this is a great opportunity for ACC students that can benefit the public.
By Dr. Giao Phan October 25, 2010 - 11:40 am
In response to the question about experience in a library counting, under our grant from TX CC SIS, there is a clear focus on working in public schools. Due to the focus on helping students transition from high school to college, most of the TX CC SIS hours will be completed in the high schools.
By Jennifer October 25, 2010 - 10:22 pm
The focus is in math and science, do you have to be proficient in these areas to volunteer? Will there be other areas, such as English, arts, or any other area? Also, who would be making the arrangements to volunteer? Would it be the faculty mentor, or the student?
By Dr. Giao Phan October 26, 2010 - 12:57 pm
Due to the focus on working in high schools in the areas of math and science, the students enrolled in TX CC SIS have to be proficient in math/science. We schedule the placement.
At this time, our grant is for this academic year. If all goes well, we are hoping to expand it to other programs in the future.
