SSI Steering Committee Update

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

  • The Board is scheduled to discuss Board Polices Regarding the Student Success Initiative and Suggested Metrics at the Oct. 18th Work Session.

STUDENT SUCCESS INITIATIVE STEERING COMMITTEE (SSISC) ACTIVITIES

  • Five subcommittees, led by the Vice Presidents of Instruction and Student Success & Support Services; the Director of Adult Education; the Director of Instructional Development Services; and the math department’s faculty coach are finalizing the SSI four‐year plan.
  • Preparations are being made for the Achieving the Dream facilitators’ Oct. 27‐29 visit. The SSISC is reviewing the Staff Engagement Plan proposed by the APTE and will discuss it at the October 15th meeting. Oct. SSI Update 2 The subcommittee for the Quality Enhancement Plan (SACS requirement) is soliciting ideas from across the campus and in the community to improve student learning. The subcommittee is currently reviewing some of the topic submissions.
  • The Achieving the Dream enhancement plans will be distributed and discussed at the Oct. 15th meeting. Shari Rodriquez is the note‐taker for the SSISC and will upload notes to the SSI website. COMMUNICATION Marketing is finalizing the FY 2011 college‐wide SSI communications plan, which includes the “It Takes a College” tagline. The SSI anchor story, “It Takes a College” was posted in September and featured the faculty coaches.
  • The SSI website is being enhanced to facilitate communication with both internal and external constituents.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT & INTRUSIVE SUPPORT

  • The first semester of mandatory orientation is continuing with the implementation of online orientation.
  • More than 50% of FTIC students have participated in the traditional faceto‐ face sessions.
  • The mandatory orientation subcommittee is evaluating the program and reviewing student surveys to improve the process in Spring 2011. Oct. SSI Update 3
  • Intrusive advising continues for students who place in one or more developmental education courses.
  • The Men of Distinction program has been expanded with a process holder committee and counseling on all campuses.
  • Four new students have joined the SSISC and are working on the subcommittees for SSI goals 3 & 5.

FACULTY & STAFF ENGAGEMENT

  • Twenty new departments are participating in the second year of the Faculty Coach program. Round 1 & Round 2 faculty coaches, along with department chairs and deans will meet for an informational session and seminar on Friday, Oct. 15.
  • The first round of 19 coaches are beginning phase II of the program and are collaborating with department chairs with support from Instructional Development Services to develop departmental improvement and evaluation plans.
  • Over 150 faculty and Student Services staff participated in a 2‐hour professional development seminar on Oct. 8 to learn about the state expectations and to discuss how we can collectively strengthen the Developmental Education system. The feedback from the small group sessions will be used to enhance the developmental education department plans.
  • The SSI Staff and Faculty‐Student mentoring program is leading group mentoring sessions through collaborative efforts with Student Life’s Oct. SSI Update 4 leadership program. The mentors are participating in training sessions during the week of Oct. 11.
  • The College Transitions Committee met Sept. 16 and Oct. 14 to review the purpose and tasks of the committee and to review the objectives for SSI Goal #2. The will begin executing and evaluating action plans over the course of the year.

DATA COLLECTION, ANALYSIS & USE

  • The Data Retreat will be held on Friday, Oct.29th at the Holiday Inn from 9:00 AM‐1:00 PM.
  • OIEA has prepared baseline data for use with the development of the SSI plans.
  • Developmental Education snapshots have been revised to facilitate analysis and use.
  • OIEA is preparing the 2010 departmental and institutional snapshots. OIEA is developing the presentation and training materials for the Oct. 29 data retreat.
  • OIEA will make recommendations about target goal ranges for the SSI four‐year plan at the October SSISC meeting and these will be discussed at the Board’s work session.
