ACC Wraps Up Big Read Saturday, Dec. 4, with “The Courageous Spirit” Closing Ceremony

ACC’s Arts and Humanities Division is wrapping up the 2010 Big Read program with closing ceremony activities on Saturday, December 4, at Rio Grande Campus (1212 Rio Grande). Events run from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Gallery Theater (Room 301).

ACC's Big Read focused on "In the Time of Butterflies," by Julia Alvarez.

ACC’s Big Read selected the novel “In the Time of Butterflies” by Julia Alvarez to explore the theme of justice. A work of historical fiction, “In the Time of Butterflies” recounts life in the Dominican Republic under a brutal dictatorship in the mid-20th century.

The closing ceremony, “The Courageous Spirit: Facing Injustice,” will include a variety of activities, including a panel discussion on relationship violence, excerpts from a dance and writing collaborative performance called “The Justice Project,” and art exhibits from Wooldridge Elementary and Theatre Action Project students.

“This event truly brings the entire Big Read experience and theme full-circle,” says Charlotte Gullick, chair of the Creative Writing Department and co-director of ACC’s Big Read. “Through the program we’ve been able to reach our communities with the joy of reading, and that’s a wonderful feeling.”

The closing ceremony is free and open to the public. For more information on the event and The Big Read program visit the Big Read website or contact Charlotte Gullick at (512) 223.3226 or [email protected].
