Stay on top of that please! Some of us ride bikes, and/or walk and take the bus. The sooner we know, the sooner we’ll be able to secure a ride, or e-mail a teacher to let them know we can’t make it to school.

There were around 350 accidents in austin and almost 150 in san marcos the night of thursday february 3rd. Due to the first layer of sleet which was followed by the snow. I was one of the 150 accidents. We hit black ice and spun out on the highway lost all control and hit the median on the highway. I now have a fractured eye socket on my left side and a sprained ankle. Risks of the same incidents are high and considering how many students there are in san marcos and austin alone its very dangerous.
Sincerely,
Kristen

How early will this update be posted? Some people have crazy early classes, and some need to inform there rides of the situation and whether they need one or not.
By Tyler February 9, 2011 - 6:48 am
The drive to campus is not what concerns me, it’s the drive back. Temperatures are said to drop well below freezing by 10am.
By PB February 9, 2011 - 6:51 am
My digital thermastat says it is already 32 outside and I can hear the heavy winds. With most employees due at work at 8 am, a noon update is going to be a little late. Weather.com is already warning of ice, granted not much, but ice all the same. I don’t think I will be venturing out unless it gets warmer, which isn’t going to happen. I already have ice on my car in Leander.
By DeeDee February 9, 2011 - 7:58 am
I think it is ridiculous to not have some kind of update every hour in weather like this and I have a test today!!
By Jaci February 9, 2011 - 8:00 am
Yea I’m with Kristen, luckily I didn’t wreck my car, but I’m one of the MANY students driving in from San Marcos. It would be great to get an earlier update! Regardless, everything is frozen at my house and Tx State classes are cancelled. I’m staying home.
By Robert February 9, 2011 - 8:14 am
I agree its almost 7:15 and I live in Kyle and there is already ice on my car and stuck to my sidewalk. I almost wrecked my car the other day on a patch of ice on 35, not to mention its a brand new car. Is one day of missing an hour class worth the risks? I think not staying home today.
By Robert February 9, 2011 - 8:20 am
and to have an update every 6 hours is stupid.
By Tiffany February 9, 2011 - 8:21 am
I’m not risking my life with this chance of ice. I’m staying home as well.
By Richard February 9, 2011 - 8:29 am
Keep an eye on your ACC g-mail. I received several updates through that last Thursday.
By PbH February 9, 2011 - 8:45 am
THIS IS TOTALLY RIDICULOUS THAT THEY ARE NOT GOING TO GIVE ANOTHER UPDATE TILL NOON!! I HAVE A 3 1/2 DAUGHTER AND WAS SUPPOSE TO GO TO CLASS AT 745 WHICH MEANS I WOULD HAVE HAD TO TAKE HER IN THIS WEATHER. I EMAILED MY TEACHER THAT I AM NOT DRIVING IN THIS WEATHER. ICE PELLETS AND ICEY ROADS…I DON’T THINK SO. I LIVE DOWN SOUTH AND NOT USED TO WEATHER CONDITIONS LIKE THIS AND/OR DRIVING IN EITHER! MY CLASS IS ONLY TILL 1015 ANYWAY.
By Brian Howard February 9, 2011 - 8:50 am
Yeah, calling this at 5 am with a follow up at noon would be foolish anywhere, most of all Texas. We can drop 10 degrees in less time than it takes to post this response.. yeah, some fellow just went akimbo all over the sidewalk. Love you ACC, but I can’t go around chancing akimbo Willy Nilly like this.
Besides, the Online Services are quite safe. Way to think ahead, guys!
By Carey February 9, 2011 - 8:51 am
I have been reading the posts on FB as well as here and I feel like ACC should look at the whole picture not just the surrounding area in town. I am in Bastrop and my car door is frozen shut. It is sleeting here. It is supposed to get worse. If we drive the hour to Austin then we will be stuck in Austin and have to try to drive back in worse conditions.
By Robert February 9, 2011 - 8:52 am
yep there is no excuses for this. Them knowing the weather was getting worse around this time, but will not update tell noon. Glad this is what my money goes to. TX STATE was posted an hour ago that classes are cancelled
By Robert February 9, 2011 - 8:55 am
The last email i got was around 6 AM
By Sebrina February 9, 2011 - 9:22 am
ACC Please update sooner. It’s already dropped almost 30 degrees in less than 2 hours. We need to know sooner than noon!
By Colt February 9, 2011 - 9:23 am
I’d love to stay home, but I have a presentation scheduled today. One that would be unwise to miss. The campus is on a hill…
By DL February 9, 2011 - 9:34 am
Seriously ridiculous that during times like this when weather is changing so often, and there are campuses of ACC NOT in the Austin metro that are at risk, you don’t update sooner?!? And you would rather these kids risk their lives to get there? And the RIGID policy that they can’t make up a test if they miss it regardless of extenuating circumstances? THAT is just unreasonable.
By Stelisa February 9, 2011 - 9:46 am
Yeah ACC doesn’t give a d**n about its students safetys I live in round rock and the roads are bad but they don’t care they never do.
By Robert February 9, 2011 - 9:48 am
Today has changed my whole outlook on ACC.Poor student services very poor. Thats all i have to say
By Mike February 9, 2011 - 9:49 am
Ice on parts of College Park drive here at RRC. Ice at various points in the parking lot and side walks here.
By Stephnie February 9, 2011 - 10:13 am
Ok Really! My doors on my house are frozen shut and in the span of a few hours it has gone from 40 down to 20 degrees plus it rained all night and Acc President doesn’t see a problem with holding classes? REALLY!
By Ashlee February 9, 2011 - 10:19 am
Ironically my class starts at noon. So what, am I supposed to just wing it, drive nearly an hour (an hour an a half today to keep a safe speed) to campus in this weather and then have a 50/50 chance that when I arrive I’ll still actually have class?
Yeah, no thank you.
By Kemk February 9, 2011 - 10:22 am
My husband just drove from Walburg (north of Georgetown) to IBM at mopac and Braker area and normally it takes 30 minutes. It took him 1 hour and 15 minutes. He said it is pretty treacherous out there and the traffic a mess. Our son has classes 35 minutes drive (normally) from here at Cypress Creek. He just went outside and the metal animal cage is frozen shut and had to pry it open to let the dogs out. I think with temps not rising over 31 degrees today, the weather is not going to improve at all, only get worse. It seems too dangerous for students to be driving in icy conditions.
By christina February 9, 2011 - 10:24 am
unfortunately the test makeup policy is the teacher’s policy, not the school’s. but not updating for 6 hours in weather like this is bordering on insane and shows that the college has no care for the safety of it’s students.
By realistic student February 9, 2011 - 10:25 am
wow you all need to calm down. its not that bad in most places. icy spots are not growns to stop a whole day. If you are traped in your home because you live outside the city limits or in another area that is pron to getting icy conditions, just contact your professor and i’m sure arrangements can be made.
By Tigist February 9, 2011 - 10:30 am
How early will this update be posted? It almost 10 a.m.I have a very important assigment due today,so that’s means there is no way that I am go’na miss that class. In the other hand I don’t want to risk my life.ACC PLEASE POST NEW THING SOONER THAN NOON!!!!!
By anthony February 9, 2011 - 10:44 am
this is stupid, how am i expected to make it up the hill at pinnacle campus when its covered in ice!!!!! lol.
By David February 9, 2011 - 11:10 am
Just got through with some errands in South Austin. Conditions aren’t really that treacherous at the moment. Don’t know what it’s like north though. Everyone chill out, take it slow, and drive safe.
By Student February 9, 2011 - 11:34 am
There are some areas that are very dangerous to drive on and some that are not… If you feel unsafe, do not wait for ACC to tell you that you are unsafe, stay home. Each person needs to take responsibility for their own safety.
By Update before noon, ACC February 9, 2011 - 11:41 am
You guys need to tell us BEFORE halfway through the day whether classes are cancelled or not. I have to drive all the way north on Mopac to get to Northridge, and I don’t want to drive up there just to find that my class was cancelled. Let us know more frequently than every SIX hours. Come on.
By Mandy February 9, 2011 - 11:57 am
Driving conditions don’t seem safe right now…classes need to be cancelled
By Amy February 9, 2011 - 12:02 pm
My car door is frozen shut and my driveway is an icy hill. I have no way of making it to class this afternoon because I live in the hill country and there is just no way of getting there! I wish ACC would close. I hate missing a class day.
By Meredith February 9, 2011 - 12:06 pm
I also think its ridiculous that ACC has not been updating sooner. I have two small children that I would prefer not to be in traffic on icy roads with. I also have a 12:00 class with a major essay due that needs to be handed in person…ACC your need to update sooner rather than later to maintain any kind of order today.
By Clint February 9, 2011 - 12:33 pm
Got to class on time at 920. Find out professor is not there and whoever was there informed us class was cancelled, to sign in, and that they could be for the rest of the day based on the conditions. I didn’t have problems driving there , although I have heard some have, all I ask is for some conformity on what’s going on. With these ridiculous attendance and make up policies, I’d fight a bear to make it to class if you guys are saying it’s open.
By Ghost February 9, 2011 - 12:52 pm
Does the Presidents office even read the comments here?? Oh yeah, thats right- they don’t care- I forgot.
By Student February 9, 2011 - 12:52 pm
You need to stop complaining. If you can’t make it to class then e-mail your instructor and inform them of your dilemma instead of placing blame on the ACC student services. Regardless of the school being open or closed, you can be an adult and make the decision of your attendance on your own.
By Alex February 9, 2011 - 12:53 pm
Although entirely against class cancellations during normal times, I am finding highways extremely dangerous today. The idea of not cancelling classes on mornings like this one may cost lives to students and staff.
By Kimberly February 9, 2011 - 12:56 pm
How do expect us to get to class when 183 is shut down?! Unbelievable.
By Will February 9, 2011 - 1:08 pm
I personally don’t see why it’s worth the risk to have all campuses up and running today.
It shouldn’t affect me based on what I’ve heard about the road conditions near me, but ACC has such a wide range of campuses with students from an even wider range.
And if a local state highway is shut down (parts of 183) that is a pretty good sign that there are plenty of other areas that aren’t safe to drive through.
And I know we are adults and should make the decision if it’s safe to drive or not, but plenty of us have a lot of pressure to come due to tests, important lectures, etc. My class today is a 3 hour class. I would miss SO MUCH information if I missed.
By Jovanny February 9, 2011 - 1:10 pm
Wow, I have a test today, my car doors are shut frozen, and my class already started. I called my professors office number and he didnt answer. Great way to start off my first test! I have no idea if he is going to let me make it up. School should of been shut down, some students being very cautious, can still get hurt driving in these conditions. Today is not a good day!
By Kelli February 9, 2011 - 1:42 pm
Anyone know what conditions are like at RRC???
By Student February 9, 2011 - 3:12 pm
What IS ridiculous is that you can’t be a grown ups and make the call to come to class or not. ACC doesn’t know where your driving from, YOU DO! If you have time to sit here and complain about Big Bully ACC and the mean Ole President then you have time to send an email/call your instructor and tell them you don’t want to come in. If you believe its dangerous, DON’T DRIVE. I’m sorry if anyone was in a wreck because of the weather because it really sux and is scary as hell. I had one last year and did 2 360’s across Mopac and got T-boned on my way in because it was raining. But I surely didn’t call up my work and blame them for making me drive in the rain. And really, you want the President to sit and read petty complaints about the weather when there and far greater things going on, like running the freakin school?!? Jeeeze! Guess its easier to point fingers. Put those big girl panties on and decide for yourself to drive or not and move on!!
By kim luevanos February 9, 2011 - 3:20 pm
My class is at six tonite! And the drive there is going to be bad enough but by 7:40 tonite I cannot imagine the weather conditions. I am extremely. Dissappointed in ACC that night classes have not been cancelled I will be contacting the newspapers, the news, anyone that will listen to the fact that ACC does not care about what happens to their students!
By kim luevanos February 9, 2011 - 4:19 pm
You know what when u have an exam they wont let you make it up but you are too dense to know that. By the way are u even in college. Your education level is way below satisfactory. Learn some manners and my opinion does not have to agree with yours. If I could just decide not to go in I would but that is hardly the case now get over yourself loser!
By Michelle February 9, 2011 - 4:27 pm
And hmmmm you are sure sticking up for the school quite a bit find thar terribly odd. I would have to assume you work there and are posing as a student commeny! Hilarious anf ridiculous acc!
By kim February 9, 2011 - 4:33 pm
Ya i believe some faculty are posing as student on here!
By kim February 9, 2011 - 4:37 pm
And I love how your comments can await moderation! Which means someone has to approve them before the rest of the public can see them that’s some bull
By Mark February 9, 2011 - 5:58 pm
The problem is:
1) once ACC says “on schedule”, this means faculty is expected to come to work
2) which automatically makes students responsible for being present in class, to stay compliant with attendance policy
Conclusion? Why to endanger both? Who makes these decisions?
By Nathalie February 9, 2011 - 11:24 pm
The funniest (sarcastically speaking) thing about all of this is that some professors are taking matters into their own hands and cancelling their classes, like a responsible person who cares about the well-being of themselves and their students should. But that shouldn’t be the responsibility of the professor; it’s ACC’s duty to realize that when parts of 183 are closed, there is nothing reasonable in making the drive from Cedar Park to the Pavilion and then downtown via bus.
