Celebrate the 175th anniversary of Texas independence with Austin Community College this Wednesday, March 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Eastview Campus (3401 Webberville Rd.).
The event will feature music, barbecue, Tex-Mex dishes, and discussions with history and government experts. Speakers include former Texas Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos, Professor Larry Willoughby of the ACC History Department, and Dr. Lisa Perez-Nichols of the ACC Government Department.
Texas Independence Day celebrates the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836, which led to the creation of the Republic of Texas. As part of Wednesday’s event, students will have an opportunity to draft their own national constitution.
“This celebration will give students, faculty, and staff a greater appreciation of Texas Independence Day and the roles that many people played in achieving our freedom,” says Peck Young, director of ACC’s Center for Public Policy and Political Studies (CPPPS). “The fight for Texas independence was multi-cultural and the culmination of years of struggle.”
ACC’s Texas Independence Day celebration is free and open to students, faculty, and staff. The event is sponsored by CPPPS, the Center for Student Political Studies, the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the History Department.

Last night was fun. There was good food. Plus Professor Perez spoke. She is awesome and ACC is lucky to have her.
