Experience Poetry with Camille Dungy, April 13 at Rio Grande Campus

Camille Dungy

Enter the creative world of acclaimed poet Camille Dungy when she performs a reading at Rio Grande Campus Wednesday, April 13. The event starts at 7 p.m. in the Gallery Theater (1212 Rio Grande St., Room 201); it is free and open to the public.

Dungy’s latest work, “Suck on the Marrow,” is a historical narrative that examines the lives of characters in mid-19th century America. “Suck on the Marrow” is nominated for an NAACP Image Award and is a finalist for the California Book Award for poetry. Her other credits include “What to Eat, What to Drink, What to Leave for Poison” and “Smith Blue.” Dungy also edited “Black Nature: Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry.”

The Creative Writing Department is sponsoring the reading. Charlotte Gullick, department chair, hopes Dungy will deliver new perspectives on poetry and race.

“I feel she will offer our community, and particularly our students, a standard of excellence that will inspire and propel us all to new levels of insight,” says Gullick.

Dungy is an associate professor in the Creative Writing Department at San Francisco State University. She graduated from Stanford University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s MFA Writing Program.
