ACC hit a milestone this spring, with some 2,200 students eligible to take part in the college’s annual commencement. More than 1,100 applied to graduate this semester – also a record. Now it’s time for all the graduates to walk across the stage and receive their well-deserved diplomas. | Read about this year’s Presidential Student Achievement Award winners.
Graduates from summer and fall 2010 and spring 2011 will be honored 7 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at the Frank Erwin Center (1701 Red River St.).
“We are so proud of our graduates,” says Dr. Kathleen Christensen, vice president of student support and success systems. “Research consistently shows the value of having a goal and earning an associate degree or certificate. We encourage all our students to work toward graduation.”
State Sen. Kirk Watson will serve as commencement speaker.
“I look forward to the opportunity to speak to the ACC class of 2011 and celebrate the graduates’ achievements,” says Sen. Watson. “What they’ve accomplished is inspiring, and I want to encourage them to continue working hard as they go on to future endeavors.”
Immediately following the ceremony, graduates and guests are invited to a reception on the mezzanine at the Erwin Center.
“I’m excited for the college,” said Tomi Welch, associate registrar. “I’m proud of the staff for assisting so many students, but most of all, I’m glad we played a small part in helping students achieve their goals. It gives us great satisfaction to deliver diplomas to our graduates.”
Graduates are asked to arrive at the Erwin Center at 6 p.m. and bring their black gown and mortarboard (available at ACC bookstores). They should enter at the Red River street-level door and meet in the Lone Star Room located near the entrance. Parking is available in lot 108 (immediately south of the Erwin Center) for $12 per vehicle; the Trinity Garage (on the south side of MLK between Red River and Trinity streets) is available for $10.

Why is the graduation to take place on a day we are REQUIRED to attend class? It makes no sense especially if we have to get there before 5:00 traffic! Professors are not sympathetic to our plight either.
