ACC Opens Juneteenth Weekend with Annual Celebration at Eastview

ACC’s Eastview Campus hosted Sounds of Freedom, the college’s annual Juneteenth celebration for a community crowd of all ages on Friday, June 17.

Juneteenth is a U.S. holiday honoring African American heritage. It commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865.

ACC History Professor Roland Hayes spoke about the importance of the holiday, and encouraged the crowd to enjoy their freedom: “If you want to celebrate Juneteenth this weekend, kick back and do whatever it is you want to do.”

Grade schoolers and seniors alike took part in carnival games, local vendor sales, and educational offerings throughout the day. Local musicians performed a variety of music, and DJ Brotha K bridged the generational gap by blending decades of funk, soul, and hip-hop.

ACC’s mascot R.B. the Riverbat took plenty of photos and was a major contender in the event’s impromptu dance-off. Attendees enjoyed free lunch at the Eastview courtyard.

The celebration concluded with “Feel Free to Rip the Runway,” an annual fashion show for ACC students.

The following day, ACC joined the city’s annual Juneteenth parade, throwing candy, beads, stickers, and shirts to the crowd. View ACC’s photos from the parade here.
