ACC Promotes Higher Ed to Latino Community at Upcoming Feria

Austin Community College is one of several area businesses and organizations joining forces to promote academic success and college-readiness among Latino students at the upcoming Feria Para Aprender (The Learning Fair).

The sixth annual Feria is a Spanish-language information fair intended to foster a college-going culture among the Latino community and help education providers adapt to changing demographics. This year’s fair will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, January 28, at the North Austin Event Center, 10601 N. Lamar.

“ACC’s participation in Feria helps the community learn ways to find jobs and increase their earning potential through training and education,” says Dr. Richard Armenta, ACC associate vice president for student success. “Through this event, we can visit with students and their families about education, jobs, and career services that can assist them.”

This year’s Feria will feature interactive demonstrations about careers in healthcare, digital media, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields. Speaker Milka Duno, an engineer and racecar driver, will address the importance of education and pursuing high-demand STEM careers. The fair also will include “teen zones” focusing on topics such as bullying and being active in school.

The Austin event is one of five Ferias in cities around the country, each drawing several thousand participants. For more information, visit the Feria Para Aprender website.
