How Did You Get Here? Carnival ah! Submissions Sought

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to submit entries for Carnival ah!, a celebration of the cultural heritage that makes Central Texas unique.

Carnival ah! 2012: How Did You Get Here? will be April 11-12 at the Rio Grande Campus. Sponsored by the Arts & Humanities Division and the Center for Public Policy & Political Studies, the annual event explores our regional heritage through art, dance, drama, creative writing, language, food, and film.

“Defining the culture of the ACC service area is not an easy task,” says Lyman Grant, Arts & Humanities dean. “Through Carnival ah!, we gain a better understanding of, and appreciation for ourselves, our neighbors, our history, and how the arts and humanities express and define our identity and community.”

Proposals for participation must be submitted by Friday, February 17, and can include:

  • Performance, such as dance, music, theater, or performance art
  • Visual arts
  • Readings, lectures, workshops, forums, or presentations
  • Craft display and demonstration booths
  • Outdoor classrooms
  • Film

Performances must be at least 20 minutes long, but no longer than two hours. Open mic opportunities will be available for events lasting less than 20 minutes. All events must include time for Q&A or discussion, which does not have to be factored into the event duration.

Faculty can support the event by incorporating cultural heritage themes into their spring curriculum and referring individuals with great stories to the curatorial team.
