Celebrate History’s Influential Women; Performance Opportunities Still Available

Austin Community College faculty, staff, and students are invited to celebrate women who have made a mark on the world at the third annual “Living History Books” exhibit Thursday, March 1, at the Northridge Campus.

The free event, which kicks off Women’s History Month, will include portrayals of Susan B. Anthony, Shirley Chisholm, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, and Amelia Earhart. A few time slots remain open for additional performances.

“We wanted a program that would show our female students how women have contributed to history and how they could realize their own success in today’s world,” says Marshall Bennett, ACC special populations counselor.

Performances should last 15-20 minutes and can feature a woman from any time period or country who can be found in books, articles, or videos in ACC libraries. Presentations can include a speech, poem, song, or lists of significant accomplishments, and should be autobiographical, with participants becoming the person.

“The Northridge Campus Women’s History Committee is very excited about the success of the Living History Book Exhibit,” says Melinda Townsel, head librarian, Northridge Campus library. “This is our third year and the performances just keep getting better and better.”

“Living History Books” will be from 10 a.m.-noon and 2-4:30 p.m. at the Northridge Campus library on the second floor of Building 1000. For more information, or to sign up as a presenter, click here. For information about Women’s History topics, visit the Northridge library Research Guide website.
